University Program: Accelerated Academic Bridging in English (ESL 0140)

The Accelerated Academic Bridging in English program is designed to provide students with the necessary linguistic and academic skills to succeed in their undergraduate studies at the University of Ottawa. This intensive program is offered online and is tailored to meet the needs of students who require additional support in English language proficiency.

Program Objectives

The program aims to:

• Enhance students' academic reading and writing skills
• Develop students' academic listening and speaking skills
• Foster students' ability to analyze and synthesize academic sources
• Improve students' grammar and vocabulary for academic purposes
• Prepare students for university-level studies in their chosen discipline

Program Structure

The program consists of:

• 25 hours of instruction per week (17 hours of live online classes and 8 hours of structured independent study)
• A focus on academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
• Opportunities for students to practice their language skills in small groups and through project-based learning
• Access to online resources and support services to facilitate students' learning

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, students must:

• Have received a conditional or direct offer of admission to an undergraduate program at the University of Ottawa
• Demonstrate a need for additional support in English language proficiency

Tuition Fees

The tuition fee for the program is $6,815 CAD, which includes:

• Instruction and materials
• Access to online resources and support services
• A diagnostic test to assess students' language proficiency

Additional Fees

Students are also required to pay:

• $264 CAD for the University of Ottawa's health and dental plan
• $234.80 CAD for the U-Pass (a public transportation pass)

Program Schedule

The program is offered from July 6 to August 28, 2026, and consists of:

• Live online classes from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM (Ottawa time) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays
• Structured independent study from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM (Ottawa time) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Orientation and Pre-Arrival Course

Before the program begins, students are required to:

• Attend a mandatory online orientation session
• Complete a pre-arrival course to review academic skills and familiarize themselves with the University of Ottawa's online learning environment
• Take a diagnostic test to assess their language proficiency
