Introduction to the Environmental Engineering Science MS Degree Program

The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering Science offers focused study in the application of environmental science to environmental engineering practice. This program is designed as a pathway to a career in environmental science. Students admitted to the Master of Science program in Environmental Engineering Science may complete the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree as part of their MS plan of study.

Under the guidance of an advisory committee, students tailor an academic plan to their individual interests and professional goals, choosing an area of emphasis from the following:

MS Options

MS, Environmental Engineering Science: Thesis Option

This option requires a research thesis prepared under the supervision of the advisor. The thesis describes a research investigation and its results. The scope of the research topic for the thesis should be defined in such a way that a full-time student could complete the requirements for a masters degree in 12 months or three semesters following the completion of coursework by regularly scheduling graduate research credits.

• Total Credit Requirements:
  • Coursework (minimum): 20 Credits
  • Thesis research: 6-10 Credits
  • Total (minimum): 30 Credits
• Distribution of Coursework:
  • Series (minimum): 12 Credits
  • Electives (maximum): 12 Credits

MS, Environmental Engineering Science: Report Option

This option requires a report describing the results of an independent study project. The scope of the research topic should be defined in such a way that a full-time student could complete the requirements for a masters degree in twelve months or three semesters following the completion of coursework by regularly scheduling graduate research credits.

• Total Credit Requirements:
  • Coursework (minimum): 24 Credits
  • Report: 2-6 Credits
  • Total (minimum): 30 Credits
• Distribution of Coursework:
  • Series (minimum): 12 Credits
  • Electives (maximum): 12 Credits

MS, Environmental Engineering Science: Coursework Option

This option requires a minimum of 30 credits be earned through coursework. A limited number of research credits may be used with the approval of the advisor, department, and Graduate School.

• Distribution of Coursework:
  • Series (minimum): 18 Credits
  • Electives (maximum): 12 Credits

Program Specific Requirements

• Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

• GRE not required

International Students Requirements

• TOEFL: Recommended Score of at least 100 iBT
• IELTS: Recommended Overall Band Score of at least 7.0 Michigan Tech requires a minimum of 79 overall TOEFL or 6.5 overall IELTS score.
