Mechanical Engineering MS Degree Program

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering program offers a wide range of challenging and rewarding courses of study. The MS in Mechanical Engineering provides excellent preparation for doctoral studies or professional practice.

Mechanical Solutions and Sustainability

Students in the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering program can choose from a broad spectrum of mechanical engineering applications. The graduate program in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers a wide range of challenging and rewarding courses of study.

Research Areas

Active research thrust areas include:

  • Advanced power systems: developing critical technologies for clean, efficient, sustainable power systems, and modeling energy transport and conversion processes.
  • Mechanics of multi-scale materials: constitutive modeling of biomaterials, cellular materials, nanomaterials, energetic materials, and composite materials.
  • Multidisciplinary engineering dynamic systems: collaborative research at the interface of engineering disciplines such as dynamics, vibration, acoustics, signal processing, and controls.
  • Multi-scale sensors and systems: research into the design, fabrication, integration, and testing of physically and functionally compatible devices and components across the size spectrum.
  • Space systems: development of innovative components, systems, and architectures for micro and nanosatellite applications.

MS Plans

The program offers three options: Thesis Option, Report Option, and Coursework Option.

Application Process and Admissions Requirements

Applications are reviewed on an individual basis using a holistic approach.

Graduate School Admissions Process

The application process involves three easy steps.

Graduate School Admissions Options

Michigan Tech offers several admissions options to meet the educational needs of students from a variety of backgrounds.

Graduate School Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Graduate School as a degree- or certificate-seeking student, you need to:

  • Have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Be prepared for advanced study in your chosen field, as demonstrated by your previous degree and your scholastic record

Program Specific Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related technical field
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • Résumé / Curriculum vitae
  • Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale

International Students

  • TOEFL: Recommended Score of 90 iBT
  • IELTS: Recommended Score of 6.5 overall
  • Michigan Tech requires a minimum 79 overall TOEFL or 6.5 overall IELTS score

Accelerated Master's Program

The Mechanical Engineering Accelerated Masters program allows students to count up to six senior-level credits toward both a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Courses and Research

  • The detailed course and course-level requirements for the Thesis Option, Report Option, and Coursework-only Option are outlined on the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree page.
  • The Thesis Option requires 2024 course credits, with at least 12 at the graduate level.
  • The Report Option requires 2428 course credits, with at least 12 at the graduate level.

Advising

  • Each research-based student will work with a faculty research advisor who is a member of the mechanical engineering faculty.
  • The academic plan developed by the student and academic advisor will need written approval from the faculty advisor and the departmental graduate coordinator.

LEAP Advantage

The LEAP Advantage program allows students from India to earn their STEM masters degree at one of the largest mechanical engineering departments in the US with state-of-the-art labs and computer centers.

Eligibility

  • An undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related technical field from a regionally accredited academic institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
