Intellectual Property Law (LLM)

The Intellectual Property Law (LLM) program is designed to meet the needs of students, lawyers, and policy makers who wish to study intellectual property law from an international and comparative perspective. This program aims to provide a broad picture of intellectual property law, allowing students to critically assess the subject in a domestic, EU, and international context.

Admissions Criteria

To be considered for an offer for this program, applicants must meet all the entry requirements. The application will not be progressed if the required information and evidence are not provided.

• A copy of the degree certificate and transcripts showing a 2:2 honors degree in law, or an equivalent international degree.
• A copy of the IELTS certificate with an overall score of 6.5 with 6.0 in all subskills, or evidence of an accepted equivalent.

Course Structure

The program is delivered in two stages. Stage One (the taught component) comprises four 30-credit modules; Stage Two comprises the dissertation.

• Students must select at least two of their four taught modules and complete the dissertation in the area of Intellectual Property Law.
• Modules related to the International Intellectual Property Law focus include:

  • Trade Marks: Comparative and International Perspectives
  • Commercial Arbitration

Learning and Assessment

• How will I be taught?: Study for an LLM is intensive and challenging. Attendance at classes and dissertation supervisions is compulsory. Teaching methods include seminars, lectures, online discussion boards, self-access study packs, and formative quizzes and activities.
• How will I be assessed?: Both formative and summative assessments are used. Formative assessments do not count towards the degree but provide the opportunity to practice for summative assessments. Summative assessments count towards the degree and include written coursework, unseen examinations, or pre-release examinations.
• How will I be supported?: Support includes a specially designed research and study skills module, writing skills support for students whose first language is not English, and dedicated pastoral support through a personal tutor scheme.

Tuition Fees for 2026 Entry

• Fees for home status: ｣11,200 for Year one, with no deposit required.
• Fees for overseas status: ｣24,700 for Year one, with a ｣2,500 deposit.

Funding

Financial support may be available to individuals who meet certain criteria. This includes Master's Scholarships, postgraduate loans, and an Alumni Discount for Cardiff University graduates.

Career Prospects

A law degree does not restrict graduates to careers within the legal profession. Law graduates enter professions as diverse as finance, sales and marketing, digital communications, and recruitment. The program is committed to extending extracurricular opportunities to students, helping to enhance their CVs in a competitive graduate job market.
