Financial Economics and Banking with Foundation Year BSc

The University of Leicester offers a Financial Economics and Banking with Foundation Year BSc program, designed for students who do not meet the standard entry requirements. This four-to-five-year course provides a pathway to studying financial economics and banking.

Course Description

The BSc Financial Economics and Banking with Foundation Year introduces students to a broad range of topics, including banking, financial intermediation, asset and liability management, financial decision-making, and financial markets and institutions. Students will learn to apply economic theory in financial contexts and become familiar with techniques such as derivatives pricing, risk management methods, and portfolio management.

Entry Requirements

• A-levels: BCC, with points equivalent from the best three A-levels
• GCSE: Grades B/5 in Maths and C/4 in English
• BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM
• International Baccalaureate: Pass diploma with 26 points minimum, including appropriate Maths and English content if not held at GCSE
• Access to HE: Pass diploma with 24 distinctions in a business-related subject
• English Language Requirements: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent

Fees and Funding

• UK Students:
  • Foundation Year: Ł5,760 (2026)
  • Subsequent years: standard undergraduate rate set by the UK Government, expected to be Ł10,050 for 2027/28
• International Students:
  • Foundation Year: Ł17,750 (2026)
  • Subsequent years: standard undergraduate rate for the course, based on the year the student first started their foundation year, Ł20,200 per year for 2027/28

Careers and Employability

The course offers a year in industry or studying abroad, providing students with the opportunity to gain work experience or study at a partner institution.

Course Structure

The course consists of a foundation year, followed by three years of study in financial economics and banking. Students can opt for a year abroad or a year in industry between the second and third years.

Year 2

• Core modules: Introductory Econometrics, Principles of Banking, Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Topics in Applied Econometrics, Principles of Finance, Money and Central Banking
• Option modules: Economic History, Firms, Markets and Welfare, Labour Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, Data Science

Year Abroad or Year in Industry (optional)

Students can choose to spend a year gaining work experience on an industry placement or studying abroad at a partner institution.

Final Year

• Core modules: Financial Derivatives, Investment Management, Risk Management in Banking, Corporate Finance, Communicating Economics
• Option modules: Mathematical Modelling for Business, Managerial Economics, Mathematical Finance, International Finance, Accounting, Economics of Health, Behavioural Economics
