Fine Arts Master's Degree Program

The Master of Fine Arts is a terminal degree in the field of studio art. This 60-credit hour program has an emphasis on conceptual development and its harmony with formal aesthetic and art historical considerations.

Program Objective

The objective of the MFA is to provide advanced study in the field of art in preparation for a career as a practicing artist, in higher education, or as a professional in other art enterprises. UT San Antonio is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The graduate student to faculty ratio of 2:1 allows for considerable personal attention and constructive dialogue.

Areas of Research

• Ceramics: The Ceramics program embraces utilitarian, sculptural, and non-traditional approaches to the medium. Students with a concentration in Ceramics will be expected to have a strong work ethic and practice professional skills such as exhibiting, documenting, and writing about and discussing their work within a conceptual framework.
• New Media: The New Media Art program offers students the opportunity to invent, practice, and produce works that defy description. Using the most cutting-edge tools available, students are challenged to employ their most creative ideas to create multidisciplinary works that reflect the trajectory of art making in the 21st century.
• Painting & Drawing: The MFA painting & drawing specialization offers students a variety of approaches to contemporary painting and drawing, and differentiates itself from traditional illustration. Interdisciplinary practices including painting and drawing's overlap with sculpture, performance, socially engaged practices, and a philosophical inquiry into the nature of what art can be is highly encouraged.
• Photography: Advanced students in the photography program engage in rotating topics-based courses that merge conceptual development with traditional and contemporary techniques. Contemporary photographic practice is also experienced through exploration of performance, collaboration, intervention, installation, and incorporation of photographic image with other media.
• Printmaking: The printmaking facilities are spacious, with a studio of about 36,000 sq.ft., including three Takach litho presses, two Charles Brand and one (40×70") American French Tool etching presses, and a Challenge letterpress.
• Sculpture: Philosophically, the sculpture program is guided toward a liberal exploration of the medium. The emphasis is on the professional practice of being an artist and a sculptor. Students spend most of their time mastering the mental and physical skills needed to conceive, develop, and fabricate a body of artwork.

Studio Space and Facilities

Each graduate student is provided a private studio space with year-round access to facilities such as:

• Ventilated 2-D and 3-D studios
• Newly renovated analog photography lab
• Printmaking studio
• Computer and digital art visualization labs
• 13,000 sq ft sculpture and ceramics compound (includes access to wood, metalworking, and a variety of traditional and non-traditional ceramic processes and kilns)

Admission & Application Requirements

Applications are submitted through the UT San Antonio Graduate Application. Required documents include:

• Bachelor of Fine Arts or Equivalent Degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or have proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
• Completed adequate credit hours or foreign institution equivalent coursework as preparation for the program.
• Transcripts from all institutions attended; international transcripts must be recorded/translated to English.
• Credential Evaluation if you have earned university-level credit from foreign institutions.
• English Language Proficiency: 550 TOEFL Paper / 79 TOEFL Internet / 6.5 IELTS / Duolingo 100
