Introduction to the Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology

The Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology is a comprehensive program designed to integrate traditional PhD training in research with coursework and internship training in theory and techniques in clinical psychology. This program aims to provide students with the necessary training to pursue a specialist career in clinical research settings, including universities, hospitals, specialist research foundations, and government bodies.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must demonstrate their capability for training in Clinical Psychology through:


  • Academic Achievement/Intellectual Ability: Completion of an Honours degree in Psychology (APAC accredited) at the level of First Class or Second Class (Division A) Honours.
  • Interpersonal and Counselling Capability: Evidence of previous counselling training and relevant volunteer or work experience.
  • Personal Statement: A statement outlining the applicant's motivation for pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology.
  • Referee Reports: Three referee reports, including two from academics and one from a professional referee.

Language Requirements

International applicants must meet the English language requirements, which include:


  • IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 7.0, with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the listening, reading, and speaking components, and a minimum score of 6.5 in writing.
  • Occupational English Test (OET): Minimum score of B in each of the listening, reading, and speaking components, and a minimum score of C+ in writing.
  • TOEFL iBT: Minimum overall score of 94, with a minimum score of 24 in each of the listening, reading, and writing components, and a minimum score of 23 in speaking.
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Minimum overall score of 66, with a minimum score of 66 in each of the listening, reading, and speaking components, and a minimum score of 56 in writing.
  • Cambridge (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency): Minimum overall score of 185, with a minimum score of 185 in each of the listening, reading, and speaking components, and a minimum score of 176 in writing.

The program consists of:


  • Coursework Component: 80 credit points
  • Practicum Component: 60 credit points

Coursework Component

Students must complete 80 credit points of coursework, including:


  • Professional Practice: 10 credit points
  • Assessment, Diagnosis and Formulation: 10 credit points
  • Lifespan Psychopathology and Therapy 1: 10 credit points
  • Lifespan Psychopathology and Therapy 2: 10 credit points
  • Advanced Professional Practice: 10 credit points
