Praktisches Jahr

The Praktisches Jahr (PJ) takes place in the final year of medical studies. Students can begin the PJ after passing the written state examination.

Admission Requirements

• The PJ begins in the second half of May and November, according to Paragraph 3, Sections 1 and 2 of the Approbationsordnung für Ärzte (ÄApprO).
• Students must have passed the written state examination to be eligible.

Ausbildung

The training is divided into three 16-week periods (Tertiale) in the subjects:

1. Innere Medizin (Internal Medicine)
2. Chirurgie (Surgery)
3. Allgemeinmedizin (General Medicine) or an elective subject

Lehrkrankenhäuser und Lehrpraxen

• The Charité offers the PJ in its university clinics, as well as in teaching hospitals and practices.
• It is also possible to complete parts of the PJ at teaching hospitals of other German universities or abroad.

Bewerbung und Ablauf

Allgemeines

• Application times and deadlines can be found on the website and on the term page of the study program.
• The allocation of PJ places is only done through the central PJ portal.
• Direct application to the teaching hospitals is not possible.

Registrierung

• Students must register in the PJ portal.
• The PJ office validates the applicants and authorizes them to participate in the distribution process.
• A prerequisite is that students are at least in their 10th semester.

Härtefall

• Students who want to submit a hardship application register in the portal, book their places in the desired hospital, and submit the evidence to the PJ office.
• It is also possible to complete the PJ in 50% or 75% part-time.
• In all hardship cases, affected students choose a particularly conveniently located house where they will complete the entire PJ.

Promotionsstudierende

• Doctoral students can submit an application for preferred admission only for the subject in which they are doing their doctorate.
• Applications submitted within the deadline for hardship cases will be considered according to capacity.

Teilzeit

• Applicants who do not fall under the hardship regulation but want to complete the PJ part-time must notify the PJ office within the deadline for hardship cases.
• They then book their places normally in the local phase with the remaining applicants.

Praktisches Jahr im Ausland

• It is possible to complete PJ terms abroad.
• The training must take place at a university or one of its teaching hospitals.
• Unlike in Germany, the certificate for the PJ term must always be issued by the university itself.

Logbücher

• Logbooks can be picked up at the PJ office during office hours or downloaded from the website.

Elektronisches Portfolio

• From the PJ admission on May 22, 2023, students in the practical year will use an electronic portfolio instead of a paper logbook in the subjects of internal medicine, surgery, and anesthesiology.
