Copy Editing and Proofreading Examinable Texts
This course covers the facets of examinable academic texts that require an editor's intervention, including:
- Distinguishing editing from revising and proofreading
- Understanding the different types and levels of editing
- The 'rules' and ethics that apply to examinable texts
- The ideal academic troika (student, supervisor, editor) and their roles and responsibilities
- Fixing and flagging, process versus product approach
- Permissible formatting of examinable texts
- The editor's engagement with references
- Paying attention to the author's voice while ensuring the appropriate academic register is maintained
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, attendees will have attained the following learning outcomes:
- Distinguish between the different levels and types of editing and between proofreading and copy-editing, as appropriate to examinable texts.
- Understand and be able to adhere to the constraints imposed on editors of examinable academic texts.
- Apply Plain Language principles to render texts more accessible to readers.
- Ensure that the appropriate verb tenses and moods are used in the different components of academic texts.
- Engage at the appropriate level and extent with references and also in formatting texts.
- Deal appropriately and consistently with quoted matter, tables and figures, heads and subheads, and abbreviations and acronyms, following established conventions.
