Copy Editing and Proofreading Examinable Texts

This course covers the facets of examinable academic texts that require an editor's intervention, including:

• Distinguishing editing from revising and proofreading
• Understanding the different types and levels of editing
• The 'rules' and ethics that apply to examinable texts
• The ideal academic troika (student, supervisor, editor) and their roles and responsibilities
• Fixing and flagging, process versus product approach
• Permissible formatting of examinable texts
• The editor's engagement with references
• Paying attention to the author's voice while ensuring the appropriate academic register is maintained

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, attendees will have attained the following learning outcomes:

1. Distinguish between the different levels and types of editing and between proofreading and copy-editing, as appropriate to examinable texts.
2. Understand and be able to adhere to the constraints imposed on editors of examinable academic texts.
3. Apply Plain Language principles to render texts more accessible to readers.
4. Ensure that the appropriate verb tenses and moods are used in the different components of academic texts.
5. Engage at the appropriate level and extent with references and also in formatting texts.
6. Deal appropriately and consistently with quoted matter, tables and figures, heads and subheads, and abbreviations and acronyms, following established conventions.
