Introduction to the University Program

The university program in question is a comprehensive course of study designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their chosen field. The program is structured to provide a thorough understanding of the subject matter, with a focus on both theoretical and practical applications.

  • Program Name: Diabetesögonsjukvĺrd - fotografisk diagnostik (Diabetic Eye Care - Photographic Diagnostics)
  • Credits: 7.5 hp
  • Duration: The course starts on March 9, 2026, and ends on May 22, 2026.
  • Study Form: Distans (Distance learning), with the examination taking place on-site.
  • Maximum Number of Participants: 30

Course Objectives

The primary objectives of the course are to provide participants with:


  • A deep understanding of diabetes complications in the eye, their causes, and the potential consequences.
  • The ability to identify, describe, and grade typical diabetic changes in the retina.
  • Knowledge of diabetes as a systemic disease and its impact on patients' lives.
  • An understanding of the role of healthcare professionals in the care process and how this role may evolve in the future.

Course Content

The course covers two main perspectives:


  1. Diabetes: Pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and care.
  2. The Eye: Diabetic-specific changes, especially in the retina, special examination methods, including photographic documentation, and pharmacological and surgical treatment methods.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the course, participants must have:


  • A minimum of 180 hp in relevant fields, including a nursing or optician degree, or a medical degree with ongoing specialist training in ophthalmology.

Tuition Fee

The course fee is 20,000 SEK, excluding VAT.


Examination

The examination will take place on-site at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Eye and Vision, and S:t Eriks Eye Hospital, Eugeniavägen 12, Stockholm.

Cancellation Policy

Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to cancel the course if there are too few applicants. The registration is binding, and cancellation later than six weeks before the start of the course will result in a charge of 50% of the course cost, and later than four weeks before the start will result in a charge of the full course cost.
