Introduction to the Joint Doctoral Training Program

The Joint Doctoral Training Program between the University of the Greater Bay Area and Sun Yat-sen University aims to cultivate high-level research talents with innovative thinking, global vision, and a strong sense of national and social responsibility. The program focuses on areas such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science, and information and communication.


Program Objectives

The program seeks to train doctoral students who possess:


  • Innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Global vision and a strong sense of national and social responsibility
  • The ability to conduct complex research and innovative practices

Admission Categories and Scale

The program plans to enroll approximately 40 doctoral students in 2026, with the final number determined by the Ministry of Education. The enrollment will be based on the following colleges:


  • Sun Yat-sen University's School of Mathematics
  • School of Physics
  • School of Chemistry
  • School of Materials Science and Engineering
  • School of Electronics and Information Engineering

Learning Mode, Degree Awarding, and Study Location

  1. Full-time Non-Directional Students: The program will enroll full-time non-directional students with a four-year study period.
  2. Joint Training Plan: The joint training plan will be implemented in accordance with the agreement between the University of the Greater Bay Area and Sun Yat-sen University. Coursework will be completed at Sun Yat-sen University, while research will be conducted in conjunction with the University of the Greater Bay Area's research tasks.
  3. Degree Awarding: Students who complete their doctoral dissertation and meet the academic requirements will be awarded a doctoral degree certificate and a graduation certificate from Sun Yat-sen University.
  4. Study Location: During the coursework phase (approximately one year), students will be provided with concentrated accommodation and study facilities at Sun Yat-sen University. In other phases, the University of the Greater Bay Area will provide concentrated accommodation and study facilities in Dongguan, and both universities will be responsible for student management.

Application Requirements

  1. Application Conditions: Applicants must meet the requirements outlined in the Sun Yat-sen University 2026 Doctoral Student Admission Brochure and the relevant admission brochures of the colleges.
  2. Application Time: Applications will be accepted from the date of publication until November 10, 2025, at 22:00.
  3. Application Procedure: Applicants must log in to the Sun Yat-sen University registration system, select the corresponding college and supervisor, and choose the "University of the Greater Bay Area Joint Training Program." They must also fill in the backup information column with the name of the University of the Greater Bay Area supervisor.

Review and Evaluation

The joint working group of the University of the Greater Bay Area and Sun Yat-sen University will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the applicants, including:


  1. Qualification Review: A review of the applicants' qualifications and materials.
  2. Material Review: A review of the applicants' materials by the joint working group.
  3. Comprehensive Evaluation: A comprehensive evaluation of the applicants' academic background, professional skills, language proficiency, research ability, and potential.

Admission and Archiving

The joint working group will determine the admission list based on the comprehensive evaluation results and report it to the Sun Yat-sen University Graduate School and the University of the Greater Bay Area for approval. The admission list will be announced on the websites of both universities.


Tuition Fees and Scholarships

The tuition fees will be determined according to the standard of Sun Yat-sen University's doctoral students. The University of the Greater Bay Area will provide a research subsidy specifically for joint training doctoral students, with a duration of no less than the basic study period. Sun Yat-sen University will not provide additional scholarships. Doctoral students who meet the conditions can apply for national scholarships, university scholarships, and other awards.


Other Matters

Matters not covered in this brochure will be subject to the relevant regulations of Sun Yat-sen University's 2026 Doctoral Student Admission Brochure and the University of the Greater Bay Area's joint training program. This brochure is interpreted by both Sun Yat-sen University and the University of the Greater Bay Area.
