School of Education

The School of Education at UC Riverside is dedicated to preparing outstanding teachers and leaders in the field of education. The school's mission is to provide a transformative education that liberates individuals and communities.


Single Subject Credentials: Middle & High School

The Single Subject Credential program at UC Riverside prepares students to become exceptional teachers in middle and high school settings. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of educational issues and methodology, as well as in-class experience.


Program Overview

The Single Subject Credential program is a 12-month program that consists of educational foundations coursework and field placements. Students complete the coursework and student teaching hours concurrently. The program is accredited by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.


Program Details

  • The Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes students to provide instruction in classrooms in secondary schools (usually grades 7-12).
  • The one-year cohort model program begins in Summer quarter (June) and ends the following Spring quarter (June).
  • The program prepares students to teach secondary school (middle/high school) in one of the following subjects:
    • English
    • Mathematics
    • Social Science
    • Science (Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, Physics, and General Science)
    • World Languages (Spanish)

Tuition and Financial Aid

  • Tuition is approximately $18-$23,000.
  • Scholarships and financial aid are available, including the Dean's Automatic Scholarship for students who apply before the priority deadline.

Admissions

  • Candidates are encouraged to meet with an advisor or attend an information session prior to applying.
  • For information on admission requirements, please refer to the UC Riverside Teacher Education Program requirements.

Single Subject Exams

  • The Basic Skills Requirement can be demonstrated by a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • The following exams are required:
    • English: Subtest I, Subtest II, Subtest III, and Subtest IV
    • Foundational Level Mathematics: Subtest I and Subtest II
    • General Science: Subtest I
    • Mathematics: Subtest I, Subtest II, and Subtest III
    • Science: Subtest I and Subtest II
    • Social Science: Subtest I, Subtest II, and Subtest III
    • Spanish: Subtest I, Subtest II, and Subtest III

International Applicants

  • Non-U.S. resident applicants must complete a Certificate of Clearance through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) prior to submitting their application.
  • International applicants must also obtain a complete evaluation of foreign transcripts, degrees, and other relevant documents from a CTC-approved organization.
