Introduction to the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences

The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences is a joint establishment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Kavli Foundation. As one of the 20 Kavli Institutes located in renowned universities worldwide, the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences aims to become an international forefront research center for theoretical sciences.

Program Overview

In 2021, the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences plans to recruit several doctoral students from graduating college students to pursue studies and research in condensed matter physics theory, high-energy physics theory, and related interdisciplinary fields. The institute is affiliated with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, providing high-quality graduate courses and a research environment. It also offers sufficient scholarships and subsidies to graduate students.

Research Areas and Faculty

The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences has a strong focus on the following research areas:

  • Condensed Matter Physics Theory:
    • Zhang Fuchun: High-temperature superconductivity and correlated electron systems, topological insulators and topological superconductors
    • Su Gang: Strongly correlated systems, quantum magnetism, spin electronics, superconducting physics, nanostructure and material design, new energy materials
    • Gu Bo: Spin electronics, including two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors, dilute magnetic semiconductors, magnetic topological materials, magnetic interface systems, quantum anomalous Hall effect, spin Hall effect, magneto-optical Kerr effect
    • Mamoru Matsuo: Spin electronics, including spin transport at magnetic interfaces, spin-mechatronics
    • Zhang Long: Correlated electron systems, including unconventional superconductivity and quantum magnetism in transition metal compounds, novel quantum states and phase transitions, unconventional quantum phase transition theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulation
    • Zhu Zheng (joined in 2020): Novel states and phase transitions in strongly correlated electron systems, including Hall effects, spin liquids, high-temperature superconductivity; strong correlation numerical calculation methods, including density matrix renormalization group
    • Jiang Shenghan (joined in 2020): Correlated electron systems, topological states, spin liquids, quantum phase transitions, tensor networks
  • High-Energy Physics Theory:
    • Sun Yawen: Gravity theory, string theory, AdS/CFT correspondence
    • Wang Huaijie (joined in 2020): Quantum field theory, string theory, gravity theory, gauge-gravity duality, quantum entanglement/chaos and AdS/CFT correspondence
    • Peng Cheng (joined in 2020): Holographic principle (AdS/CFT correspondence), quantum field theory, solvable models (such as SYK-like models, high-spin theory), (low-dimensional) gravity, string theory, mathematical structure in field theory
    • Masahiro Nozaki (joined in 2020): Quantum entanglement, thermalization, non-equilibrium physics, quantum information

Application and Admission

The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences welcomes outstanding undergraduate students with a solid theoretical foundation to pursue doctoral studies. Interested students should submit their personal resume, self-statement, main course grades and department ranking. Additionally, students should contact at least one teacher to send a recommendation letter. The application deadline is June 15, 2020. The institute will select applicants for interviews based on their applications. The interview time and arrangement will be notified separately, depending on the epidemic prevention and control situation.
