Foundations of Financial Markets

The Foundations of Financial Markets course, offered in partnership with the Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA), provides a comprehensive introduction to the workings of financial markets. This course is designed for compliance and legal professionals, IT or operations professionals working in financial markets, individuals seeking to understand financial markets, and those looking to transition into a career in financial markets.


Program Overview

By completing the Foundations of Financial Markets, participants will gain a rounded baseline view of financial markets, including:


  • Critical assessment of the core functions of financial markets and their environments
  • Analysis of financial market products and their relevance
  • Understanding of how transactions are executed within a risk management framework and in accordance with relevant regulation

Key Details

  • Duration: Part-time, online, with each unit lasting 6 weeks and the complete program taking 3 months
  • Fees:
    • AFMA member firms: $3030 (2 units)
    • General public: $3390 (2 units)
  • Program Structure: The program consists of an orientation module and two core units, which must be completed sequentially

Program Outcomes

Upon completing the Foundations of Financial Markets, participants will be able to:


  • Critically assess the functions of financial markets and their environments to evaluate the implications for all relevant stakeholders
  • Analyze financial market products, their relevance, and transaction execution in accordance with relevant regulation

Orientation Module

The orientation module provides an all-inclusive study guide, covering the program structure, technical environment, study tips, referencing techniques, and academic integrity.


Core Units

  1. Financial Markets Concepts: This unit offers a broad overview of the Australian 'over-the-counter' and exchange-traded financial markets, introducing financial market sectors, participants, and the economic environment.
  2. Financial Markets Transactions: This unit provides an overview of the financial products traded in financial markets, including the identification of key features of products, deal lifecycle, and regulatory frameworks.

Continuing Education Pathways

Successful completion of the Foundations of Financial Markets provides 10 credit points towards relevant Post Graduate programs and offers several continuing education pathways, including:


  • Financial Markets Certificate
  • Graduate Certificate of Finance
  • Master of Applied Finance

Term Dates and Structure

The program is designed to suit busy professionals, with course content available online and complemented by workshops. Each unit involves a live online welcome session and a live online workshop. Terms are offered throughout the year, with specific dates provided for each term.


Assessment and Workload

  • The minimum estimated workload for each unit is 75 hours, including time spent on unit readings and assessments.
  • Assessment due dates are provided for each unit and term.

Note

  • This program does not lead to AFMA Accreditation. To receive AFMA Accreditation, participants must complete the full Financial Markets Certificate.
  • Studying the two units of the Foundations of Financial Markets simultaneously in one term is not permitted.
