Introduction to the Body Donation Program

The body donation program at Macquarie University's Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences relies entirely on the generosity of individuals who donate their bodies for anatomical examination. This program provides invaluable contributions to the training of medical professionals and the advancement of scientific and medical knowledge.

Program Overview

To become a donor, individuals will receive an information package and registration forms. Upon signing and returning the consent forms, donors will be registered and receive a letter of acknowledgement, a copy of their application forms for their next of kin, and a body donor card. Donors are required to inform their family, nurse, doctor, or nursing home administrator of their intentions.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the program, donors must:

  • be 18 years old or over, with no upper age limit
  • have died within New South Wales

Acceptance Criteria

The acceptance of a body into the program can only be determined at the time of death, considering the cause of death and other factors. A donation may not be accepted if:

  • certain medical circumstances make it ineligible, such as communicable diseases (e.g., hepatitis, AIDS/HIV, tuberculosis) or Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (VCJD)
  • the body cannot be transferred to the University within 48 hours of death
  • it is unsuitable for various other reasons (e.g., severe obesity, emaciation, tissue deterioration)
  • there is insufficient space within the anatomy facility
  • any next of kin object
  • Macquarie University determines it is ineligible for any other reason

Anatomical Examination

Anatomical examination involves the study of human anatomy for medical or scientific purposes, including research, training, and education. This may involve:

  • examination of the exterior and interior parts of the body
  • dissection using surgical instruments
  • removal of skin, opening of body cavities, and removal of limbs or tissue

Services Provided

Macquarie University provides services to internal and external organizations for research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E), education, and training, including:

  • education of medical professionals
  • development of new surgical techniques
  • collection of tissue for examination and research
  • development of new medical treatments
  • testing of current and new medical devices and imaging techniques

Next of Kin

The senior available next of kin can donate a body after death, even if consent was not given in writing during the donor's lifetime. The senior available next of kin must establish that the donor had not expressed any objection to anatomical examination during their lifetime.

Registration Process

The registration process requires donors to specify the details of their senior available next of kin and executor. If a donor does not have a next of kin or executor, they can contact the NSW Trustee and Guardian to be assigned as their executor.

Cremation and Burial

  • Cremation: Macquarie University will make arrangements for cremation in accordance with the donor's wishes, bearing the costs.
  • Burial: Macquarie University will not cover the cost of memorial services or burials, which will be a private arrangement between the next of kin and the service provider.

Information for Next of Kin

After the death of a registered donor, the next of kin should:

  • obtain a medical certificate of cause of death and cremation risk advice
  • contact the body donation coordinator at Macquarie University
  • provide initial details about the donor and send the required certificates
  • follow the coordinator's instructions regarding the donation process

Retention and Disposal

Macquarie University is legally allowed to hold a donated body for four years from the date of death, with the possibility of an extension up to an additional four years. The University will dispose of the body at a time no longer than eight years from the date of death.
