Annual Portuguese as a Foreign Language Course 2025/2026

The Portuguese as a Foreign Language courses (PFL) have been organized by the School of Arts and Humanities since 1934. In the last few years, more than 40,000 students from the world over have attended these courses. Besides the classes, students can take part in cultural and academic activities promoted by the Institute of Portuguese Culture and Language in partnership with other divisions of the University of Lisbon.


Course Details

  • The course is a classroom course of 200 hours per semester, equivalent to 24 ECTS.
  • The course is divided into two semesters:
    • 1st Semester: October 6th, 2025 to January 28th, 2026
    • 2nd Semester: February 9th to May 29th, 2026
  • Applications open from May 1st to September 12th, 2025 for the 1st semester and from May 1st, 2025 to January 16th, 2026 for the 2nd semester.
  • Available schedules:
    • Morning: 8:00 – 12:30 (occasionally, on some days, until 14:00)
    • Afternoon: 14:00 – 18:30

Tuition

  • The tuition fee is 1280 € per semester.
  • Upon registration, the student must pay 50% of the total tuition fee, which is non-refundable.
  • The remaining amount must be paid during the 7 days before the start of classes.

Language Levels

Never Studied

  • The student will be placed in the beginner level (A1).

Have Studied, but was Never an ICLP Student or Does Not Have a CAPLE Certificate

  • The student's placement will be determined by taking a diagnostic/placement test.

Was a Student at ICLP in a Previous Course or Has a CAPLE Certificate

  • Taking the test is not necessary. If the student attended the ICLP in the immediately preceding course and received a positive evaluation, they will be placed at the next level. If they recently presented a CAPLE certificate, they will also be placed at the next level.

Syllabus

The curriculum of the courses is structured into two semesters of 200 hours each (from level A1 to C2), corresponding to 12 teaching hours per week, spread over 14 weeks, plus a total of 32 hours of immersion activities.


A1 – Beginner Level

  • Language Structure and Function I – 3 hours/week
  • Oral Comprehension and Production I – 4 hours/week
  • Written Comprehension and Production I – 2 hours/week
  • Language Lab I – 3 hours/week
  • Language Immersion Activities – 32 hours/semester

A2 – Elementary Level

  • Language Structure and Function II – 3 hours/week
  • Oral Comprehension and Production II – 4 hours/week
  • Written Comprehension and Production II – 2 hours/week
  • Language Lab II – 3 hours/week
  • Language Immersion Activities – 32 hours/semester

B1 – Intermediate Level I

  • Language Structure and Function III – 2 hours/week
  • Oral and Written Comprehension I – 3 hours/week
  • Writing Workshop I – 3 hours/week
  • Conversation I – 2 hours/week
  • Contemporary Portuguese Culture I – 2 hours/week

B2 – Intermediate Level II

Assessment and Certificate

Access to the Annual Course requires a placement test conducted in two stages: online and in-person (on the first day of classes). Due to the course's structure, all students must take a placement test. Students will be exempt from this test if they attended an ICLP course immediately beforehand or if they present a certificate from CAPLE - Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira.


  • Students who pass will receive a Certificate indicating their grade and proficiency level.
  • The certificate is free. However, the following fees apply to subsequent requests:
    • 2nd copy: €5
    • 3rd copy or more: €20/document

Proof of Enrolment or Attendance

Whenever necessary, the Office may issue a declaration confirming the student's enrollment (before the course) or a declaration certifying the student's attendance (during the course).


  • 1st copy: Free
  • 2nd copy: €5
  • 3rd and subsequent copies: €20

Scholarships

Requests for scholarships must be made at the Instituto Camões.


Withdrawal and Refund

  • In the case of the course being cancelled by ICLP, any paid fee will be reimbursed in full.
  • In the case of withdrawal, by the student, the amount paid at the time of registration is not refundable.
  • If the student has paid the full amount of the tuition fee upon registration, the amount paid when it was not yet due will always be returned.
  • The transfer of registration to another period of the Course is admissible upon request made at least 15 days before the start of the course that is withdrawn and only if it respects a semester of the same academic year.
  • In the case of a transfer request, according to the terms established by the previous point, the amount of 50% of the registration will be retained. The remaining amount will be considered as part of the required registration fee for the course to which the transfer is intended. The student must provide the remaining amount required for the new registration, so that the transfer is considered as valid. After a course transfer, the registration's total amount will not be refunded, under any circumstance.
