Introduction to the BDS Program

The King Khalid University College of Dentistry offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) program. This program is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the science and pathology underlying oral and dental diseases, as well as the skills necessary to manage various diseases and conditions.


Program Objectives

The objectives of the BDS program are:


  1. To provide undergraduate and graduate programs that are comprehensive and reviewed periodically.
  2. To utilize a structured evaluation and assessment system for student performance.
  3. To appoint and retain qualified faculty.
  4. To expedite student, intern, and faculty research.
  5. To increase the number of research publications in peer-reviewed and indexed journals.
  6. To engage students, interns, and faculty in outreach programs.
  7. To organize dental health education programs in schools, social centers, rehabilitation centers, and the community.
  8. To deliver treatment that meets the standards of patient care and satisfaction.

Program Learning Outcomes

The program learning outcomes are designed to ensure that graduates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attributes to practice dentistry effectively.


Graduate Attributes

The King Khalid University College of Dentistry has six Graduate Attributes, which are:

  6. Professionalism

Interpretation of Graduate Attributes

  • GA1: Ethical Responsibility - Includes responsible citizenship, integrity, and coexistence with respect for diversity.
  • GA2: Scientific Knowledge and Clinical Skills - Encompasses a broad range of oral health knowledge and skills, autonomous self-directed learning, and the ability to work and think productively without supervision.
  • GA3: Creativity and Innovation - Involves research under supervision, critical thinking, and the use of the latest equipment and materials.
  • GA4: Patient Care - Focuses on competence in providing patient care and practicing evidence-based dentistry.
  • GA5: Health Promotion - Involves promoting oral health in the community.
  • GA6: Professionalism - Includes leadership qualities, project management, oral and written communication skills, and digital literacy.

Program Structure

The BDS program consists of 194 credit hours distributed over 71 courses across six years. Each course has a duration of six months. The program includes:


  • LEVEL 1 & 2: English, Arabic, Islamic culture, physics, chemistry, biology, and biostatistics.
  • LEVEL 3 & 4: Human anatomy, physiology, medical biochemistry, introduction to dentistry, and dental anatomy.
  • LEVEL 5 & 6: Restorative and prosthodontic procedures, oral diagnosis radiology, oral pathology, dental pharmacology, local anesthesia, and applied surgical anatomy.
  • LEVEL 7 & 8: Clinical training in prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, oral surgery, and oral diagnosis.
  • LEVEL 9 & 10: Clinical training on live patients under supervision, covering all clinical topics and procedures.
  • LEVEL 11 & 12: Autonomous dental procedures and community outreach programs.
  • INTERNSHIP: A 12-month internship training program to improve the graduate dentist's knowledge and skills in general dentistry practice.

Admission

The admission process requires:


  • Being a Saudi national or born to a Saudi mother.
  • Holding a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Meeting medical requirements for health specialties.
  • Not being academically or disciplinarily dismissed from any Saudi university.
