Introduction to the BDS Program

The King Khalid University College of Dentistry offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) program. This program is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of dental science and practice.

Program Objectives

The objectives of the BDS program are:

1. To provide undergraduate and graduate programs that are comprehensive and reviewed periodically.
2. To utilize a structured evaluation and assessment system for student performance.
3. To appoint and retain qualified faculty.
4. To expedite student, intern, and faculty research.
5. To increase the number of research publications in peer-reviewed and indexed journals.
6. To engage students, interns, and faculty in outreach programs.
7. To organize dental health education programs in schools, social centers, rehabilitation centers, and the community.
8. To deliver treatment that meets the standards of patient care and satisfaction.

Program Learning Outcomes

The program learning outcomes are designed to ensure that graduates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attributes to practice dentistry effectively.

The King Khalid University College of Dentistry has six Graduate Attributes, which are:

Interpretation of Graduate Attributes

• GA1: Ethical responsibility - Responsible citizenship, integrity, coexistence, and respect for diversity.
• GA2: Scientific knowledge and clinical skills - A broad range of oral health knowledge and skills, autonomous self-directed learning, work and think productively without supervision, lifelong learning.
• GA3: Creativity and Innovation - Research under supervision, critical thinking and creativity, use of the latest equipment and materials.
• GA4: Patient care - Competent in providing patient care, practice evidence-based dentistry.
• GA5: Health promotion - Promote oral health in the community.
• GA6: Professionalism - Leadership qualities, project management, oral and written communication skills, digital literacy.

Program Structure

The BDS program consists of 194 credit hours distributed over six years, with 71 courses, including 8 institutional requirements and 63 program requirements. The program includes didactic lectures, preclinical and clinical chair-side teaching, and a compulsory one-year internship.

Program Levels

• Level 1 & 2: English, Arabic, Islamic culture, basic science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, biostatistics).
• Level 3 & 4: Human anatomy, physiology, medical biochemistry, introduction to dentistry, dental anatomy.
• Level 5 & 6: Restorative and prosthodontic procedures, oral diagnosis radiology, oral pathology, dental pharmacology, local anesthesia, applied surgical anatomy, tooth extraction.
• Level 7 & 8: Clinical training in prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, oral surgery, oral diagnosis, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral pathology, CPR.
• Level 9 & 10: Clinical training on live patients, clinical microbiology, Islamic culture.
• Level 11 & 12: Autonomous dental procedures, community outreach programs.
• Internship: A 12-month program to improve the graduate dentist's knowledge and skills in general dentistry practice.

Admission

The admission process requires:

• Saudi nationality or born to a Saudi mother.
• A high school diploma or its equivalent from within or outside the Kingdom.
• Meeting medical requirements for health specialties.
• Not being academically or disciplinarily dismissed from KKU or any other Saudi university.
