Doctor of Philosophy in Human-Computer Interaction
The Doctor of Philosophy in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) advances the frontiers of HCI by preparing students for independent, original research. The program provides a deep understanding of the theoretical, methodological, and technical aspects of HCI. Graduates are positioned to lead and conduct independent, original research in HCI and are prepared for careers in research, industry, and entrepreneurial ventures, with an advanced appreciation for the ethical, societal, and sustainability concerns of technology development.

The Ph.D. thesis exposes students to cutting-edge and unsolved research problems in the field of human-computer interaction, where they are required to propose new solutions and significantly contribute towards the body of knowledge. Students pursue an independent research study, under the guidance of a supervisory panel, for a period of three to four years.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program requirements, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate expert knowledge of fundamental and advanced human-computer interaction (HCI) concepts through the design of novel research agendas at the intersection of HCI and artificial intelligence (AI).
- Conduct independent research to identify and effectively solve novel research problems in socially impactful real-life applications of HCI and AI.
- Deliver on collaborative HCI research projects, innovating in and applying advanced human-centered design to create innovative solutions.
- Initiate, conduct, and communicate original scholarly work, expertly conveying complex ideas across diverse formats and channels.
- Initiate and lead complex collaborative, cross-disciplinary partnerships and research projects that advance AI-powered human-centric technology innovations.
- Demonstrate ability to navigate the ethical, social, cultural, and environmental implications of AI, in the context of organizational governance and policy.
Completion Requirements
The minimum degree requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy in Human-Computer Interaction program is 60 credits, distributed as follows:
- Core courses: 16 credits
- Electives: 8 credits
- Internship: 2 credits
- Advanced research methods: 2 credits
- Research thesis: 32 credits

Admission Criteria
MBZUAI accepts applicants who hold a completed degree in a STEM field such as computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, mathematics, physics, or other relevant science or engineering major that demonstrates academic distinction in a discipline appropriate for the doctoral degree.
- Completed degree: Bachelor's degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent, or Master's degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent.
- English language proficiency: IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced, Cambridge C2 Proficiency, or Duolingo English Test.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE): Submission of GRE scores is optional for all applicants but will be considered a plus during the evaluation.
- Statement of purpose: A word essay explaining why you would like to pursue a graduate degree at MBZUAI.
- Referee recommendation: Applicants will be required to nominate referees who can recommend their application.
- Screening exam: An online screening exam that assesses knowledge and skills relevant to your chosen field.

Study Plan
Students are expected to complete coursework in the first year of degree and focus on the research and thesis writing in the subsequent three years.
