Introduction to the Part-time MBA Online/Modular Option

The Part-time MBA Online/Modular Option at NYU Stern is a hybrid approach to part-time MBA education, combining live online learning with immersive on-campus sessions in New York City. This program is designed for working professionals who want to earn a top-ranked MBA without putting their careers on hold.

Program Structure

The Online/Modular format offers the perfect blend of flexibility and rigorous, high-quality education. Students enjoy the best of both worlds: maintaining flexibility with live online core courses and benefiting from in-person classes right in the heart of the business world.

  • Engaging Live-Online Classes: Participate in core classes that are mostly conducted live online, featuring dedicated professors who harness the power of the online platform to create dynamic, interactive learning experiences and foster deeper connections.
  • Close-Knit Community: Become part of a supportive block and orientation group, where you'll journey through the program alongside a close-knit community of peers, building lasting friendships and a strong network.
  • Unmatched Flexibility: Enjoy a program designed with maximum flexibility, allowing you to balance your studies with other commitments while still receiving a top-tier education.

Online Core Courses

Part-time MBA students complete the core curriculum almost entirely through live online courses, which constitute about half of the MBA program. The exception is the hybrid Strategic Communication course, which takes place during Langone LAB, a three-day high-impact orientation to the MBA program.

  • Students must be in NYC for the in-person meetings of the Strategic Communication course during Langone LAB.
  • Students are responsible for any transportation and/or accommodation needed to attend Langone LAB.
  • If for any reason you feel it would be inordinately difficult to attend LAB in person in NYC, you may contact the Office of Student Engagement to discuss whether alternatives are available.

Online/Modular Elective Options

Students will complete 1.5 core credits during the mandatory in-person Langone LAB. For the elective portion of the program, students must complete an additional 9 elective credits through modules, traditional on-campus courses, or travel programs. Students may finish the elective portion of the Part-time MBA degree program through a combination of the following three choices:

1. Modules with NYC Immersion

Each module has a specific business theme, is 4.5 credits and five weeks long, and consists of the following:

  • Two weeks of online courses with asynchronous content and individual and group assignments to complete by deadlines set by the faculty.
  • One week of in-person classes on campus. These classes meet Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM ET each day. While there'll often be homework after class, you'll also have time to socialize and explore.
  • Two more weeks of online courses with asynchronous work to complete.

2. In-person Classes

Online/Modular students who live in the area can attend in-person electives on weeknights and/or Saturdays in NYC, as well as international business study and experiential learning courses. Up to 4.5 credits of Doing Business in (DBi) international courses can count towards the 9-credit in-person elective requirement.

3. Online Elective Courses

We offer some of our most popular electives online. Like the online core courses, electives are taught live mostly on weeknights. There's also a selection of electives on Saturdays and during the winter and summer intensive periods.

Course Schedule

As a student in the Online/Modular Option, you're placed in a cohort with other Online/Modular students, typically 50-60 students, all of whom take most core classes together.

  • Fall and Spring semesters: Courses are typically about 12 weeks long. Each class meets once per week.
  • Summer semester: This is divided into two six-week semesters. Each class meets twice per week.
  • Intensive periods: Courses held during intensive periods in January and late summer provide the opportunity to earn 1.5 or 3 credits at a faster pace and are usually offered on a combination of weeknight and weekend days. Intensive courses are not the same as modules and some are only offered in person.

Example Course Schedules

The program is flexible and can be done in 2 – 6 years. Most students complete the program in about 3 years. Students in the Saturday and Online/Modular options would likely have to take weeknight courses in person in NYC to complete the program in less than 3 years. You have 6 years to complete your MBA program.
