LMU Research Fellowships

The LMU Research Fellowships support excellent postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines. The program has been supported by the Marie Skodowska-Curie COFUND program of the EU Commission since 2017.

The fellows pursue their own two-year research project with the support of a professor at LMU, sharpening their scientific profile. Mobility and networking with international partner institutions are particularly promoted through research stays or collaborations.

In addition to Incoming Fellowships for outstanding international early-career researchers, there are also Outgoing Fellowships for excellent postdoctoral researchers who have completed their doctorate in the last twelve months or will soon complete it.

The LMU Research Fellows are members of the Young Center of the LMU Center for Advanced Studies.

Since the beginning of the LMU Research Fellowship Program in 2009, a total of 74 excellent early-career researchers have been funded in eight calls, 46 of whom came from institutions abroad, and 45 percent were women. Almost all former fellows remained in science and received attractive positions at renowned scientific institutions, including professorships at institutions such as the University of Oxford, New York University, and EPF Lausanne.

Currently, no further call is planned.

Selected Successes

• On the Trail of White Giants: Meteorologist Linda Forster is an Outgoing LMU Research Fellow and is working on a project on cloud formation at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and LMU. The research results can help predict future climate change.
• With Research in Tow: Chemist Henry Schurkus was the first Outgoing LMU Fellow. As part of his fellowship, he conducted research at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. His project could contribute to making hydrogen production carbon-neutral.
• In the Mirror of Objects: Art historian Philippe Cordez brings out the hidden connotations of objects that have survived from pre-modern times. He came to LMU as a Research Fellow and later led a junior research group funded by the Elitenetzwerk Bayern.
