Curriculum and Time-Tables MSc Chemistry
The study program according to the Master examination and study rules of May 2015 is modularized. Most of the modules are finishing with a graded examination. The final grade is calculated by all marks of the modules. In addition, all examinations are recorded with ECTS.
Overview study program
The study program offers two options:
- Option A: The choice of three major subjects (required electives) in chemistry fields with 30 ECTS credits each.
- Option B: The choice of two major subjects (required electives) in chemistry fields with 30 ECTS credits each and one additional minor subject with 15 ECTS.
Option A
- The choice of three major subjects (required electives, WB-A, WB-B, WB-C) in chemistry fields with 30 ECTS credits each.
- Each major subject comprises a lab module with a specialized research lab course with seminar and a theoretical module, which encompasses a compulsory colloquium and a large number of lecture courses from which three must be chosen.
- Both modules of a major are graded.
- The theoretical module has an oral examination covering the three chosen lectures and the colloquium.
- The master thesis within 6 months (30 ECTS).
Option B
- The choice of two major subjects (required electives, WB) in chemistry fields with 30 ECTS credits each.
- Each major subject comprises a lab module with a specialized research lab course with seminar and a theoretical module, which encompasses a compulsory colloquium and a large number of lecture courses from which three must be chosen.
- One additional minor subject with 15 ECTS.
- The minor subject comprises a lab module with a specialized research lab course and a theoretical module, which encompasses a number of lecture courses from which two must be chosen.
- Further five specialization lectures covering 15 ECTS in total.
- The master thesis within 6 months (30 ECTS).

Major subject/required elective "Inorganic Chemistry"
If "Inorganic Chemistry" is selected as major, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in each module of WP 1 and WP 2.
- WP 1 - Lab course: Advanced Research Lab Course in Inorganic Chemistry (16P SWS); 12 ECTS.
- WP 2 - Lectures: Expert colloquium in Inorganic Chemistry (3 SWS); 6 ECTS.
- Three lectures with 3 ECTS each have to be selected out of T1ID to T1IZ-10.
Major subject/required elective "Organic Chemistry"
If "Organic Chemistry" is selected as major, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in each module of WP 3 and WP 4.
- WP 3 - Lab course: Advanced Research Lab Course in Organic Chemistry (16P SWS); 12 ECTS.
- WP 4 - Lectures: Expert colloquium in Organic Chemistry (3 SWS); 6 ECTS.
- Three lectures with 3 ECTS each have to be selected out of T1OD to T1OZ.
Major subject/required elective "Physical Chemistry"
If "Physical Chemistry" is selected as major, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in each module of WP 6 and WP 41.
- WP 6 - Lab course: Advanced Research Lab Course in Physical Chemistry (16P SWS); 12 ECTS.
- WP 41 - Lectures: Expert colloquium in Physical Chemistry (3 SWS); 6 ECTS.
- Three lectures with 3 ECTS each have to be selected out of T1PD to T1PZ.
Major subject/required elective "Theoretical Chemistry"
If "Theoretical Chemistry" is selected as major, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in each module of WP 7 and WP 42.
- WP 7 - Lab course: Advanced Research Lab Course in Theoretical Chemistry (16P SWS); 12 ECTS.
- WP 42 - Lectures: Expert colloquium in Theoretical Chemistry (3 SWS); 6 ECTS.
- Three lectures with 3 ECTS each have to be selected out of T1TD to T1TZ.
Minor subjects in the field of "Chemistry"
Besides 2 major subjects in Chemistry, the minor subject can also be in Chemistry excluding the subjects already taken as majors.
- 15 ECTS have to be acquired in the lab course and the lecture part.
- Lab course: Research lab course in one of the 4 chemistry subjects.
- Lectures: Two lectures (in total 6 ECTS) have to be selected out of the modules WP 2, WP 4, WP 41, and WP 42.
Minor subject "Chemical Biology"
If "Chemical Biology" is selected as minor subject, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in WP 12 and WP 48.
- WP 12 - Lab course: Research Lab Course in Chemical Biology (10P SWS); 9 ECTS.
- WP 48 - Lectures: Basics of Cloning, Genomics and Proteomics (2V SWS) 3 ECTS, Coenzymes and Biosynthesis (2V SWS) 3 ECTS, Concepts and Tools in Chemical Biology (2V SWS) 3 ECTS.
Minor subject "Biochemistry"
If "Biochemistry" is selected as minor subject, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in WP 13 and WP 49.
- WP 13 - Lab course: Research Lab Course in Biochemistry (10P SWS); 9 ECTS.
- WP 49 - Lectures: Lecture in Biochemistry (2V SWS) 3 ECTS, Advanced Topics in Biochemistry (2V SWS) 3 ECTS.
Minor subject "Structural Biology"
If "Structural Biology" is selected as minor subject, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in WP 5, WP 16, and WP 43.
- WP 43 - Lab course: Research Lab Course in Structural Biology (10P SWS); 9 ECTS.
- WP 5+16 - Lectures: Lecture in Structural Biology I (2V SWS) 3 ECTS, Advanced Topics in Structural Biology II (2V SWS) 3 ECTS.
Minor subject "Molecular and Cellular Genetics"
If "Molecular and Cellular Genetics" is selected as minor subject, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in WP 14 and WP 50.
- WP 14 - Lab course: Research Lab Course in Molecular and Cellular Genetics (10P SWS); 9 ECTS.
- WP 50 - Lectures: Lecture in Molecular and Cellular Genetics: "Posttranscriptional Gen-Regulation" (2V SWS) 3 ECTS, Advanced Topics in Molecular and Cellular Genetics: "Genetic control of complex processes" (2V SWS) 3 ECTS.
Minor subject "Physics"
If "Physics" is selected as minor subject, 15 ECTS have to be acquired out of WP 17, WP 52 to WP 55.
- Courses in Physics: Atomic and Molecular Physics, Particle Physics, Solid-State Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics.
Minor subject "Computer Sciences"
If "Computer Sciences" is selected as minor subject, 15 ECTS have to be acquired out of WP 18 to WP 20 and WP 56, WP 57.
- Courses in Computer Sciences: Computer Science: Systems and Applications, Computer Architecture, Programming and Modeling, Introduction to Programming: Programming and Software Development, Operating Systems.
Minor subject "Specific Supplement to Chemistry"
The following list of "Specific Supplement to Chemistry" subjects may vary according to the availability.
- Specific Supplement "Pharmacology and Toxicology": Lab course, Practical exercises in pharmacology and toxicology, Seminar: Experimental Pharmacology for Biologists and Chemists, Lectures, Pharmacology and toxicology for Biologists and Chemists.
Specialisations
If two major subjects in Chemistry and one minor subject are selected, 15 ECTS have to be acquired in the following lecture modules of WP 2, WP 4, WP 41, and WP 42 or WP 48 to WP 50, respectively.
- In the minors (WP 49) and Molecular and Cellular Genetics (WP 50) the examination is only possible over two lectures with 6 ECTS - there are no exams of single lectures.
