Program Overview

The M.J./M.A. in Philanthropic Studies is a program designed for current or aspiring nonprofit professionals, nonprofit executives, personal finance officers, foundation program officers, family foundation principals, professional fundraisers, corporate executives, or nonprofit board members. Philanthropic institutions address the most difficult and intractable issues in society, such as poverty, homelessness, illiteracy, and chronic illnesses like cancer. Nonprofits provide most of society's arts and culture opportunities, support education and research, and contribute to improvements in society.

Program Significance

The scale of philanthropic work is significant, with the nonprofit sector constituting 10 percent of the US labor force and more than 5 percent of GDP annually. Nonprofit employment is concentrated in industries with highly complex legal environments, such as health and education. These two nonprofit subsectors account for two-thirds of nonprofit employees in Indiana.

Program Requirements

• The program requires a total of 48 credits, consisting of:
  • 24 McKinney law credits
  • 24 Lilly Family School of Philanthropy credits
