Early Childhood Education Degree Requirements

B.S. Education: Early Childhood Education

The B.S. Education in Early Childhood Education is a four-year program that prepares students to teach in early childhood settings.


Four Year (Traditional) Pathway

Students typically begin their university coursework at IU Indianapolis, matriculate through the Pre-Block classes, and then apply to the Teacher Education Program.


Professional Education (60 credits/2.50 GPA)

The program requires 60 credits of professional education coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.50.


Block I: Foundations in Early Care and Education - 15 credit hours

Block II: Teaching Methods: Part I (Pre K-3) - 15 credit hours

Block III: Teaching Methods: Part II (Pre K-3) - 15 credit hours

Courses must be taken in prescribed, successive blocks. Successful completion (C or higher) of all courses in each block is a prerequisite for the next block and student teaching. Blocks must be completed in sequence from one semester to the next.


Special Education Dual Licensure

To get certified, students must take the following 18 credit hours in the appropriate sequence:

ENL Dual Licensure

To get certified, students must take the following 18 credit hours in the appropriate sequence:


  • EDUC-L 441 Bilingual Education
  • ENG-Z 432 Second Language Acquisition or ENG-Z 205 Introduction to English Grammar
  • EDUC-L 403 Assessment Literacy for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity
