Introduction to Yonsei International Summer School

Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) is a premier academic program offered by Yonsei University, one of the most prestigious institutions in Korea. The program provides students with a unique opportunity to experience Korean culture and education while earning academic credits.


Program Overview

The YISS program offers a wide range of courses in various fields, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. Students can choose from a 4-week or 6-week program, with the option to take online courses or a combination of online and in-person courses.


Academic Calendar

The academic calendar for YISS is as follows:


  • 6-Week Track:
    • Period 1: 09:00 ~ 10:40 (Yonsei Portal System Period 1, 2)
    • Period 2: 11:00 ~ 12:40 (Yonsei Portal System Period 3, 4)
    • Period 3: 13:30 ~ 15:10 (Yonsei Portal System Period 5, 6)
    • Video Lectures (Online Only): Flexible (Yonsei Portal System Period 9, 10, 11)
  • 4-Week Track:
    • Period 1A: 09:00 ~ 11:30 (Yonsei Portal System Period 1, 2, 3)
    • Period 2A: 13:00 ~ 15:30 (Yonsei Portal System Period 5, 6, 7)
    • Video Lectures (Online Only): Flexible (Yonsei Portal System Period 9, 10, 11)

Course Load

The minimum course load is 1 course (3 credits), and the maximum course load is 3 courses (9 credits). Internships are worth 2 credits and require enrollment in at least one additional course.

Credit Transferability

All YISS courses are credit-bearing, and credits earned at YISS are transferable to most institutions outside of Korea. However, students are advised to consult with their academic advisors at their home institution to confirm credit transferability.


Korean Language Courses

YISS offers Korean language courses through two separate programs: YISS and the Korean Language Institute (KLI). Courses are available at different levels and time slots to suit students' preferences.


Course Schedule Options

Students can choose between a 4-week program and a 6-week program.


  • 4 weeks: Not able to take 6-week courses.
  • 6 weeks: Should take at least one 6-week course, but can also choose courses from 4-week courses.
  • Online Course: Students may take online courses only, or a combination of online and in-person courses.

Class Hours

Classes are held 4 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).


Important Notes

  • All courses, except for video lectures (online only), are conducted in-person.
  • Students are required to register for courses during the designated course registration period.
  • There is a minimum number of students policy, and courses with less than 5 students registered will be canceled (10 minimum for online real-time courses and video lectures).
  • Video lectures (online only) are not open to Yonsei students.
