Double (Dual) Degree Program between Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, School of Medicine: Overview

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a public university established in 1963, consisting of eight faculties, each with its own graduate school. Initially, the university offered lectures in Chinese, but as it became more international, lectures began to be taught in English. After Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997, the university shifted its focus from education to research and has earned a high reputation worldwide, having produced several Nobel Prize winners in the fields of physics and economics.

Program Description

The Double (Dual) Degree Program is a joint graduate education program between Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, School of Medicine. The program aims to innovate medical research and strongly promote international collaborative research. Students in the doctoral programs of the Faculty of Medicine at Nagoya University and the Faculty of Medicine at CUHK are required to study abroad at a partner university. Upon meeting the degree requirements of each university, they will be awarded doctoral degrees from both universities.

Program Requirements

• Upon completion, students are awarded a doctoral degree by each university.
• The term of study at Nagoya University is four years. The term of study at CUHK is three years for those with a master's degree and four years for those without.
• After enrolling in this program, students are required to conduct research at Nagoya University for at least the first year.
• Students are required to complete half of their term of study at CUHK during their research at CUHK.
• A maximum of 10 credits can be transferred (compulsory subjects at CUHK are 50 credits).
• The start and end dates do not necessarily have to be the same.
• Two dissertations with different content must be written for the doctoral degree (in CUHK, a thesis does not necessarily need to be published).
• Students will create a course plan when they enroll in the program.
• Annual progress reports must be submitted to each institution.
• If a student withdraws from Nagoya University, he/she will also be withdrawn from CUHK.

Eligibility

• Those who will enroll in or are currently enrolled in the doctoral program (general medicine) at the Graduate School of Medicine at Nagoya University.
• Those who are academically excellent and of good conduct.
• Meet one of the following language requirements at the time of application (must have taken the exam within the last two years): IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 points or DMAT 21 points

Costs and Subsidies

• Pay the entrance examination fee, admission fee, and tuition fee to Nagoya University (same amounts as for the General Medicine major).
• Pay the entrance examination fee to enter CUHK.
• During your stay at CUHK, you will pay tuition fees and will be eligible to receive a scholarship (amount subject to change depending on the year).
