Overview of the Critical Care Residency for Physician Assistants
The Critical Care Residency for Physician Assistants is a one-year training program designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for Physician Assistants to become well-trained critical care providers. The program combines didactic training, hands-on simulation, and clinical rotations at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Program Description
The program's mission is to support PA resident growth in critical care through a variety of educational experiences. PA residents work within a team to provide comprehensive and evidence-based care to patients, including assessment, diagnosis, management, and evaluation of patient progress. They are responsible for managing all aspects of patient care, from fluid resuscitation and antibiotic management to pressor use and interpretation of hemodynamic parameters.
Rotations
PA residents rotate through various clinical settings, including:
- Medical Intensive Care Unit (JHH and JHBMC)
- Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit (JHH and JHBMC)
- Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (JHH)
- Burn Intensive Care Unit (JHBMC)
- Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (JHH and JHBMC)
- Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (JHH)
- Emergency Medicine
- Nephrology Consult Service
- Infectious Disease Consult Service
- Palliative Care Consult Service
- Airway Days in the OR
- IR Bedside Procedure Service
Didactic Opportunities
The program offers various didactic opportunities, including:
- Two-week hospital and residency orientation
- Weekly PA Resident Lectures focused on critical care-specific material
- Weekly Grand Rounds
- Weekly Intern Lectures
- Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Conference
- Monthly APP Grand Rounds
Certifications and Training Opportunities
PA residents have access to various certifications and training opportunities, including:
- ENLS: Emergency Neurological Life Support
- ABLS: American Burn Life Support
- SCCM Critical Care Ultrasound Course
- ATLS: Advanced Trauma Life Support
Simulation Training Opportunities
The program provides simulation training opportunities, including:
- Central Line
- Arterial Line
- Intubation
- Bronchoscopy
- Foley Insertion
- Mock Codes
- Standardized Patients
Supervision
PA residents are mentored by Attendings, Fellows, Residents, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners during rotations. They work in teams to provide comprehensive care to patients and are responsible for assessing and responding to patient care needs.
Responsibilities of the PA Resident
PA residents are responsible for:
- Providing the best possible care to patients
- Logging duty hours, procedures, and patients cared for
- Evaluating rotations and educational opportunities
- Maintaining all certifications, including Maryland License, CPR/BLS, ACLS, NCCPA, CDS, and DEA
On-Call Activities
PA residents participate in on-call activities, including in-house call and at-home call, to provide continuity of patient care experiences throughout a 24-hour period.
Completion of Program
To successfully complete the program, PA residents must meet certain standards, including:
- Clinical Performance/Professionalism: receiving a score of 6.5/10 on overall performance on 70% or more of total evaluations
- Laboratory/Classroom Testing: scoring 75% or higher on final written examination or 15% improvement from initial testing
- Case Presentations: successfully leading the presentation of two case studies in PA lecture series throughout the academic year
Paid Time Off
PA residents receive 22 total vacation days, including two weeks of vacation and additional days for interviews. They also receive guaranteed time off over the Christmas or New Year's holiday.
CME and Conference Funding
The program provides access to CME education sponsored by JHMI, with opportunities to gain over 50 Category I CME credits. PA residents also receive funding for conference expenses through the Tuition Reimbursement program and the Yearly Professional Allowance.
Stipend
The program offers a stipend of $70,176 for the 12-month program, with 22 days of personal time off and dedicated sick time. Meal vouchers during call are also provided, along with health and dental insurance, life insurance, short- and long-term disability.
