Social Studies Education
Program Overview
The Social Studies Education program is designed to prepare students to teach social studies in elementary and secondary schools. The program focuses on the content knowledge and major concepts of social studies disciplines, including American History, Michigan Studies, Geography, Political Science, and Economics.
Course Offerings
- SSE 5720 Social Studies Disciplines for Elementary Teachers I: This course explores the content knowledge and major concepts of American History, Michigan Studies, and Geography to help prepare PK-6 learners to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society and interdependent world. Offered every term.
- SSE 6710 Secondary Social Studies Methods I: This course focuses on the foundations of social studies instruction and curriculum. Students are exposed to methods of teaching in middle and senior high school, including the use of state standards in the design of instruction and teaching approaches in the various social studies disciplines. Offered winter.
- Corequisite: TED 6620
- Restriction(s): Enrollment limited to students in the College of Education.
- SSE 6720 Social Studies Disciplines for Elementary Teachers II: This course explores the content knowledge and major concepts of Political Science (Civics and Government) and Economics to help prepare PK-6 learners to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society and interdependent world. Offered fall.
- SSE 6730 Secondary Social Studies Methods II: This course involves the development of curricular lesson plans, unit plans, and other teaching strategies utilizing current approaches in social studies education. Offered fall.
