نظرة عامة على البرنامج

Energy Conversion Processes, Master of Science (Technology)

The Advanced Energy Solutions master's program includes four major subjects. Each major subject starts with a solid theoretical foundation, upon which other skills are built. In later studies, students broaden and deepen their understanding of the challenges faced by our society in the field of energy.

Program Description

The Energy Conversion Processes major delves into the physical and chemical phenomena behind energy conversion, such as heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid flow, as well as energy conversion systems as a whole. The major provides students with the knowledge needed to design future power plant processes, waste and biomass conversion processes, wind farms, and energy storage systems.

Other major subjects in the Advanced Energy Solutions program are:

  • Industrial Energy Processes
  • Energy in Buildings and Built Environment
  • Energy Systems and Markets

Language of Instruction

The language of instruction in the master's program is English. For more information on degree languages and languages of instruction at Aalto University, please visit the university's website.

Tuition Fees and Scholarships

The tuition fee for this program is 17,000 euros per academic year. Citizens of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are not required to pay tuition fees. Aalto University offers a limited number of scholarships to non-EU/EEA citizens who are required to pay tuition fees.

Program Structure

The Diploma Engineer degree is 120 ECTS credits. The degree consists of major studies, a master's thesis, and elective studies.

Major studies (60 ECTS credits) include:

  • 15 ECTS credits of shared studies for all Advanced Energy Solutions majors
  • 20 ECTS credits of major-specific shared studies
  • 25 ECTS credits of advanced studies in the major

The program's shared studies ensure that all students have the same basic knowledge regardless of their background. Major-specific shared studies provide a foundation for the major's field of study. Specialization occurs in the major's advanced studies, which the student can choose from suggested study paths. The study paths for the Energy Conversion Processes major are:

  • Conversion and Storage
  • Computational Methods
  • Power and Heat Production Technologies

Elective studies (30 ECTS credits) can be freely chosen or can form a minor subject. The degree also includes a 30 ECTS credit master's thesis.

Specializations

The Energy Conversion Processes major's study paths are:

  • Conversion and Storage
  • Computational Methods
  • Power and Heat Production Technologies

Students apply for a study place in one of the Advanced Energy Solutions majors. It is not possible to change majors later.

Internationalization

The program's study environment is international, and studies are conducted in multicultural groups. The program offers good opportunities for student exchange at Aalto's partner universities.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Energy Conversion Processes major are leading experts in fields such as bioenergy, alternative energy, thermal processes, and energy modeling and simulation. The program also provides a good foundation for further studies.

Research Focus Areas

Energy Conversion Processes major students study in interaction with researchers investigating, for example, hydrogen production, computational fluid dynamics, energy storage, synthetic fuels, biofuels, and carbon capture.

Collaboration with Other Actors

Aalto University and the program's schools collaborate with numerous high-level universities worldwide. Students typically complete their master's thesis in collaboration with a company in the industry. The program includes the Advanced Energy Project course (AAE-E3000), where students practice consulting skills by solving industry-related problems.
