Introduction to the Doctoral Program in Geography

The University of Basel's Faculty of Philosophy and History offers a doctoral program in Geography, providing students with the opportunity to explore the complex relationships between the environment, human societies, and individuals. The program is designed to foster advanced research skills, critical thinking, and expertise in geographical sciences.

Program Structure

The doctoral program in Geography typically lasts three to five years and consists of a dissertation, a curriculum-based component, and a doctoral examination. The curriculum-based component includes a minimum of 12 credit points for individual doctoral studies and 18 credit points for doctoral programs.

Research Areas

The program focuses on two main research areas:

  • Human Geography/Stadt- and Regionalforschung: This area explores the social and spatial aspects of human societies, including urban and regional development, market research, and social geography.
  • Physiogeography and Environmental Change: This area examines the physical processes that shape our environment, including geomorphology, environmental change, and the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the doctoral program, applicants must hold a Master's degree in a related field with a minimum grade of 5.0 (on a scale of 1-6). International students must also demonstrate proficiency in the language of instruction, either German or English, at a level of C1 according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Application and Enrollment

The application process involves submitting an online application, including all required documents, such as transcripts, diplomas, and language proficiency certificates. Enrollment is possible at any time, but applicants are advised to apply early to ensure a place in the program.

Doctoral Committee

Each doctoral student is assigned a doctoral committee, consisting of a primary supervisor and at least one secondary supervisor. The committee provides guidance and support throughout the program and evaluates the student's progress and dissertation.

Dissertation and Examination

The dissertation is an original research contribution that demonstrates the student's ability to conduct independent research. The doctoral examination consists of a defense of the dissertation and a discussion of the research topic.

Publication and Graduation

After completing the program, students are required to publish their dissertation in accordance with the faculty's publication guidelines. The graduation ceremony takes place twice a year, in March and September, where students receive their doctoral degree and diploma.

Funding Opportunities

The University of Basel offers various funding opportunities for doctoral students, including scholarships, research grants, and teaching assistantships. Students are encouraged to explore these options and apply for funding to support their research and living expenses.
