Introduction to Applied Methods and Procedures for Underwater Surveying
Program Overview
The Center for Education and Lifelong Learning of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki offers the "Introduction to Applied Methods and Procedures for Underwater Surveying" course. This 81-hour course provides basic knowledge and skills for participation in an underwater scientific project.

Aim and Objectives
- Aim: To provide the basic knowledge and skills for those divers and researchers willing to participate in the preparation and carrying out of underwater survey campaigns.
- Objectives:
- Development of knowledge and skills for the use of maps and diagrams in underwater researches
- Introduction to procedures of planning and organizing an underwater survey campaign
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, participants will:
- Familiarize with the particular skills, procedures, and techniques applicable to an underwater survey project
- Understand and recognize potential problems and risks associated with underwater surveying
- Be able to cooperate with the team members of an underwater survey
Selection Criteria
- Participant Selection & Requirements:
- Applicants should be students or graduates in a relevant field (e.g., biology, geology, archaeology, engineering)
- Second Level Scuba Diving Certification (30m depth) is required
- A recent medical certificate specific to scuba diving must be presented at least one week before the course starts
- Personal diving equipment is required, including:
- Fins, mask, and snorkel
- Compressed gas cylinder and valve
- Buoyancy control device (BCD) with tank mount or separate backpack, and low-pressure inflator
- Primary regulator and alternate air source
- Breathing gas monitoring device
- Depth monitoring device
- Weight system and weights
- Adequate exposure protection
- At least one audible emergency surface signaling device
- Dive Planning tables and timing device
- Dive knife or cutting tool
- Compass
Format
The course consists of three main sections:
- Knowledge development
- Development of diving skills (dry and confined water sessions)
- Practical application of developed knowledge and skills at open water conditions

The course is organized into 4 modules:
- Module 1: General Diving Skills
- Module 2: Diving Safety
- Module 3: General Scientific Diving Techniques
- Module 4: Underwater Survey Techniques

Liabilities
Evaluation of participants will be carried out through:
- An overall written assessment (examination) at the end of the first section
- Assessment of participants during the second section in confined water
- Submission of a fieldwork report of the performed underwater survey and review of a technical paper for the presentation of results

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded:

- PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Level 1
- PADI Underwater Survey Diver
- DAN.UNICAL Photogrammetry Diver
Participants who have attended but not completed successfully will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.
