Program Overview

The ATHENS program is a network of 16 European Higher Education Institutions, with the Universidad Polit嶰nica de Madrid (UPM) being the Spanish member. The program offers week-long courses, held twice a year in March and November, where students from all participating universities can attend.

Course Structure

The ATHENS courses consist of 30 hours of classes, laboratory work, technical visits, and practices, spread over a week. The course topic, level of difficulty, language of instruction, schedule, and prerequisites are determined by the professor teaching the course.

Eligibility and Application

To participate in the ATHENS program, students must be enrolled in a degree program at the UPM and have a valid registration during the application period and the session dates. Students cannot be participating in a mobility program outside of the UPM during the application period or the session dates.

Application Process

Interested students must register on the ATHENS website and submit their application, along with all required documentation, to the International Office of their center before the deadline. Students are recommended to apply for at least three courses in order of preference to increase their chances of being assigned a place.

Course Formats

The ATHENS courses are offered in two formats:

• Traditional ATHENS format
• BIP (Blended Intensive Program) format, which combines physical mobility with an online component and can be funded through the Erasmus+ program.

Participation and Funding

The costs associated with participating in the ATHENS program, including travel, accommodation, and living expenses, are borne by the student. Students selected for the BIP format will be informed about the funding process.

Important Information

Students are responsible for reviewing the course contents and prerequisites before applying. The selection of courses is the responsibility of the student, and they should ensure they meet the requirements for the courses they apply for. Canceling a course may incur costs that the student must pay.

Session Dates

The next session is scheduled to take place from March 14 to 21, 2026. The list of admitted students is expected to be published in the first week of February.

Documentation and Confirmation

Students must print and sign their application and submit it to the International Office of their center. The document can be signed manually or electronically with a digital certificate. A confirmation email will be sent to selected students directly from the ATHENS platform.
