Master in Music Performance or Composition

The Master's Programme in Music Performance or Composition at the University of Bergen is a highly competitive program that requires a completed Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance or Composition, or other relevant field of study. The program is designed to provide students with advanced training in music performance or composition, and to prepare them for a career in the music industry.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• A completed Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance or Composition, or other relevant field of study, amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits, but normally of 4 years duration.
• Documentation of English language proficiency, as the program is taught in English.
• A strong academic background and a demonstrated ability in music performance or composition.

Application Requirements

The application deadline for entry in August 2026 is 15 December 2025. The application form will be open from 1 November. To apply, students must:

• Register their application in S鷦nadsweb
• Fill in the additional application form
• Upload required documentation, including:
  • CV showing former education and artistic experience and activities
  • Secondary School certificate / High School Diploma
  • University degree certificate(s)/diploma(s)
  • Transcript of records
  • Documentation of English language proficiency
  • Copy of passport or picture ID
• Upload audition video or composition portfolio, depending on the program

Tuition Fees

Non-EU/EEA/EFTA applicants are required to pay a tuition fee of NOK 401,704 for the school year 2026/27.

Residence Permit

Non-EU/EEA/EFTA applicants must also apply for a residence permit for studies and document sufficient funding to cover living expenses, which is currently NOK 151,690 for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Audition Video Requirements

Applicants must upload their audition videos directly to their application folder by 15 January. The video must be unedited, not older than 6 months, and show the applicant in full figure.

Composition Portfolio

Applicants must submit an extensive personal and compositional portfolio, including:

• CV showing musical background, training, practice, and development
• Documentation showing experience as a composer
• Substantial documentation of compositional works
• Written description of the composition
• Related artistic work
• 2 letters of recommendation
• Thoughts on compositional practice

Interview

The compositional portfolio will be the basis for the interview, and applicants must be prepared to answer questions ranging from composition, score analysis, orchestration, history of music, and other subjects relevant to the field of composition.

Application Status

The status of the application will be "Under consideration" until the processing is finished. Applicants will be notified of the result by email, and the offer of admission will be published in S鷦nadsweb.

The admission process includes:

• Application period: 1 November - 15 December
• Registration period: 15 December - 15 January
• Processing period: 15 January - 2 February
• Invitation to interviews: 2 February
• Interviews: 2 - 6 March
• Offer of admission: 11 March
• Rejections: by the end of March

Program Details

The program is highly competitive, and only applicants who meet the admission requirements can be qualified. The program is designed to provide students with advanced training in music performance or composition, and to prepare them for a career in the music industry. The program includes:

• Music performance: 45 minutes self-chosen audition repertoire showing breadth and diversity within the standard repertoire for the instrument
• Composition: extensive personal and compositional portfolio, including substantial documentation of compositional works and a written description of the composition

The program is part of the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, and is connected to the Grieg Academy Department of Music. The research areas include:

Academic Requirements

Applicants must have obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance or Composition, or other relevant field of study, amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits, but normally of 4 years duration. The degree must be issued by a recognized university or university college.

Language Requirement

Applicants who are not native English speakers must document their proficiency in English by taking an internationally recognized English test.

Document Requirements

All uploaded documentation must be scanned from original documents, and if the original language of the documents is not English or a Scandinavian language, officially certified copies of a translation to one of these languages must accompany certified copies of the documents in the original language. All documents must be uploaded as good quality PDF-files.
