Program Overview

The program "Barn som pĺrřrende nĺr foreldre eller sřsken blir alvorlig syke eller dřr" (Children as Next of Kin when Parents or Siblings Become Seriously Ill or Die) is a part-time, online course offered by the University of Bergen. The program aims to provide knowledge and skills on how to care for children who become next of kin or are left behind when parents or siblings become seriously ill or die.

Introduction

The program is designed for individuals who work with children, such as healthcare professionals, teachers, and social workers. It provides advanced knowledge on how to care for children who become next of kin or are left behind when parents or siblings become seriously ill or die. The program can be taken as a standalone course or as part of the Experience-Based Master's program in Crisis Psychology.

Program Content

The program covers various topics, including:

• Diagnosis-independent and advanced knowledge of the consequences for children who become next of kin
• The importance of system work, communication, and collaboration between healthcare and social services
• How different measures and interventions can support family function and promote mastery and positive development
• Key themes:
  • Laws and regulations regarding children's rights as next of kin
  • Children's perspectives, challenges, and needs in meeting with serious illness, crisis, and death
  • Short-term and long-term consequences for children's development and life management
  • The importance of system work, collaboration, and interaction at different levels and between sectors

Program Structure

• The program consists of four digital study gatherings, each lasting two days
• There will be online work between the gatherings
• The digital study gatherings include lectures, group work, and practical exercises/demonstrations
• It is mandatory to participate in at least 80% of the teaching, which means attending at least three of the four gatherings
• Between the gatherings, students must submit mandatory assignments through the learning platform Mitt UiB
• The final assessment consists of a written home exam over 10 days, with a submission of a written assignment of approximately 3000 words (+/- 10%)

Admission Requirements

• The program is at the master's level and can be taken as a standalone course or as part of the Experience-Based Master's program in Crisis Psychology
• Applicants must document that they meet both admission requirements:
  1. Bachelor's degree, cand.mag. degree, or equivalent degree or basic education with a scope of at least three years/180 study points
  2. Minimum two years of relevant work experience from areas such as healthcare, social services, or education
• Special and relevant work experience beyond the minimum requirement of two years can, after individual assessment, replace up to one year of the education requirement (60 study points)

Documentation Requirements

Applicants must document that they meet the admission requirements by submitting:

• Diploma/transcript from higher education
• CV
• Confirmation of relevant work experience
• If the applicant has education from the University of Bergen or other public universities and colleges in Norway, the university may have access to the exam results, and the applicant may not need to upload their diploma

Tuition Fee and Semester Fee

• The program has a tuition fee of NOK 22,000
• The tuition fee covers all costs for teaching and exams
• Additional expenses for pensum literature will be incurred
• All students must also pay a mandatory semester fee of NOK 650 per semester, which goes to the Student Welfare Organization at Vestlandet and covers common welfare benefits and services for all students.
