Introduction to the Higher Service Training Program for Scientific Libraries

The higher service training program for scientific libraries is designed to qualify individuals for the position of librarian in the higher service of scientific libraries and information systems, such as university and college libraries, state and national libraries.


Job Description

As a subject specialist in a university library, the librarian serves as a liaison between the library and research or teaching departments. They are responsible for selecting and cataloging scientific literature and other subject-specific information carriers, such as databases and CD-ROMs. This work is done independently and in cooperation with representatives from various departments and faculties. The librarian must consider the profile and budget of the library, as well as the specific study and research focuses of the department.


Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a librarian in the higher service include:


  • Selecting and cataloging scientific literature and other information carriers
  • Providing subject-specific user guidance, training, and seminars
  • Conducting tours and other educational events
  • Managing the library's collection and budget
  • Collaborating with other departments and faculties

Training Program

The training program for the higher service of scientific libraries in Baden-Württemberg is regulated by the Ministry of Science's ordinance on the training and examination for the higher service of scientific libraries. The program consists of:


  • A 14-day theoretical introduction course at the Bavarian Library Academy in Munich
  • A one-year practical training period at a training library
  • An 11.5-month theoretical training period at the Bavarian Library Academy in Munich

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the training program, applicants must:


  • Hold a diploma, master's, or equivalent degree from a university or equivalent institution
  • Demonstrate suitability for the higher service of scientific libraries
  • Meet the requirements for appointment to the civil service
  • Possess a medical certificate of fitness for the higher service

Application and Admission Procedure

Applicants must submit their applications to the training libraries, which then forward the applications to the training authority. The training authority decides on admission and assignment to a training library.


Duration, Start, and Remuneration

  • Duration: 2 years
  • Start: October 1st, every 2 years
  • Remuneration: Approximately €1,425 per month as a trainee allowance
