Overview of the Faculty

The Faculty of Chemistry is located in the main building of chemistry, Johannisallee 29, 04103 Leipzig.

Structural Chemistry and Spectroscopy M.Sc.

The Master of Science program in Structural Chemistry and Spectroscopy is an international, research-oriented, and English-language program.

At a Glance

  • Study direction: Natural and Geo Sciences
  • Study type: Advanced
  • Degree: Master of Science
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Study format: Full-time, part-time
  • Start of study: Winter semester, summer semester
  • Admission restrictions: No restrictions
  • Standard study period: 4 semesters
  • Credits: 120

Admission Requirements

Specific admission requirements include:

  • A first qualifying university degree (Bachelor's degree) in Chemistry or another natural or engineering science with at least 65% of the total credits (115 credits out of 180 credits) in comparable chemical content to the Bachelor's program in Chemistry at the University of Leipzig.
    • Including contents of Inorganic Chemistry with at least 15% (25 credits), Organic Chemistry with at least 15% (25 credits), Physical Chemistry with at least 10% (20 credits), and Analytical Chemistry with at least 5% (10 credits).
    • Additionally, laboratory work in the fields of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, each with a minimum of 250 hours.
  • Knowledge of English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or proof that this will be available by the start of the Master's program.

Contents of the Study

The program is internationally oriented, research-oriented, and English-language. The Master's program introduces advanced spectroscopic methods and focuses on the structure of chemical and biochemical molecules, particularly biopolymers.

Structure of the Study

The study consists of a compulsory section with a scope of 20 credits. Four modules from the sub-areas of Inorganic, Organic, Analytical, and Physical or Theoretical Chemistry must be completed.

Special Features

  • English-language program
  • A stay abroad is possible
  • Broad range of options for studying chemical subjects and more interdisciplinary specialization directions

Career Prospects

The goal of the study is to impart broad, application-ready knowledge. This will enable graduates to work in many areas, such as:

  • Industry, particularly in branches of chemistry, but also physical industry, optics, medical technology, and scientific instrument manufacturing
  • Research institutions outside of universities and state institutions
  • As chemists at universities and colleges in research and teaching

Practical Training and Study Abroad

A stay abroad is generally recommended and must be organized by the students themselves.
