Program Overview

The Bachelor of Renewable Energy Engineering (Honours) is a four-year program that provides students with the specialized knowledge and skills required to work in the rapidly growing renewable energy industry. The program is specifically built upon the core strengths of the University in the fields of energy and engineering and draws from the wealth of expertise, skill sets, and world-class infrastructure found at the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER).

Description

The program is an interdisciplinary engineering program that is built on the foundation of electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering topics as they apply to renewable energy. The program offers specialized courses in solar, wind, bioenergy, and geothermal, hydro, and hybrid systems, power system design, and grid integration encompassing generation, transmission, utilization, and storage of renewable energy. The core courses are complemented with a selection of electives from across the University in the areas of climate change policy, law, and economics, social and environmental sciences, in turn preparing students to tackle complex multi-disciplinary problems.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, graduates will have:

  • Comprehensive, theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and/or the underpinning natural and physical sciences as applicable to the engineering discipline
  • Effective team membership and team leadership
  • Orderly management of self and professional conduct
  • Professional use and management of information
  • Creative, innovative, and pro-active demeanor
  • Effective oral and/or written communication in professional and lay domains
  • Ethical conduct and professional accountability
  • Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects
  • Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes
  • Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools, and resources
  • Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem-solving
  • Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities, and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline
  • Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline
  • Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
  • In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline
  • Conceptual understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the engineering discipline

Admission Requirements

Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme. The University accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission, including Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications, prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.

English Language Requirements

All applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement. The overall minimum English language proficiency requirement is 6, with a sub-test minimum of 6.

Assumed Knowledge

Mathematics Advanced with a grade of Band 5 or higher is assumed knowledge for this program.

Recommended Studies

HSC Mathematics Extension 1 or equivalent is recommended. Study of one science-related subject would also be an advantage (Biology, Physics, or Chemistry preferred).

Professional Accreditation

The program is accredited by Engineers Australia, the Australian professional engineer's association. Graduates of this program are automatically enabled to join as graduate members on completion and as student members during studies.

Career-Ready Placements

Requirements for qualification of this award include completion of at least 12 weeks of industrial experience of a nature acceptable to the College Board. Students are encouraged to obtain and to report on a substantial block of this experience at one time, but several shorter periods, of not less than 2 weeks duration, will be accepted.
