PhD in Nursing

The PhD in Nursing Program at Auburn University College of Nursing is designed for nurses who are driven to discover, challenge, and lead. The program prepares students to uncover new frontiers in healthcare science, policy, intervention, and technology. Students will work alongside scholars and scientists in various disciplines, developing innovative and practical solutions to the healthcare challenges of today and the future.

Overview

The PhD Program is primarily online, requiring students to visit campus 1-2 times per semester. The program utilizes state-of-the-art online and distance learning technologies to facilitate student learning. PhD graduates will provide leadership to the nursing profession, preparing new generations of professionals, expanding healthcare excellence, driving innovative research, and exploring new technologies and programs to create lasting health and wellness.

Admissions Deadline

PhD students are admitted in the fall semester only, with a deadline of June 1 for full-time admission. International applicants must submit all required materials by March 1. Prospective PhD students interested in the G-RISE program must apply by January 31, 2025.

Admissions Criteria

To be admitted to the PhD program, applicants must:

• Provide proof of a current, unencumbered RN license from their state of residence within the United States.
• Have earned a Master's degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from an accredited nursing program with a minimum Nursing GPA of 3.0.
• Provide three professional references for the online recommendation form.
• Submit a Professional Goal Statement indicating present research interests and career goals.
• Provide a writing sample, such as a published paper or coursework from a previous degree program.
• Provide a current curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
• Complete an interview via telephone, on-campus, or video-conference, if required.
• Submit official transcripts to the Graduate School.

Application Checklist

1. Follow the Graduate School Application Instructions.
2. Upload all required items with the application, including:

• Transcripts from every college attended.
• Three professional references for the online recommendation form.
• Professional Resume.
• Unencumbered registered nursing license.
• Professional Goal Statement.

3. The College of Nursing Admission, Progression, and Graduation Committee reviews all completed applications.
4. The College of Nursing will notify the Graduate School regarding admissions decisions.
5. Once admitted, students must log into their application and accept or decline enrollment.

Role of a Doctoral Student

As a doctoral student, one pursues a terminal degree, preparing to be a leader in nursing. The doctoral education provides the ability to demonstrate ethical choices based on high moral and ethical principles, as well as the values and professional practices implicit in nursing decisions. Students are expected to actively invest their time in the pursuit of research and scholarly products while being an involved member of the academic community.

Continuation Requirements

All PhD students must take and pass a comprehensive examination before commencing their dissertation research. The PhD comprehensive examination can be taken once the student has completed at least 28 credit hours of PhD coursework.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition is the same for Alabama residents and out-of-state residents, currently $630 per credit hour. Other fees may be incurred prior to enrollment and/or as students progress through the program.

Accreditation

The baccalaureate degree program in nursing, master's degree program in nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice program, and post-graduate APRN certificate program at Auburn University are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The Auburn University College of Nursing is approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
