Explore Program

The Explore program is an intensive language immersion program that offers funding and opportunities for Canadian Citizens and permanent resident students who are learning English as an additional language. Participants will enhance their English language knowledge and skills in a supportive and enriching environment, all while creating great memories. They will engage with local culture and discover what Winnipeg and Manitoba have to offer.


Program Information

The program is also available to international students for a fee. It includes:


  • In-Person 18+ program: Immerse yourself in an intensive program with international students to improve your oral and written English skills.
  • Virtual 16+ program: Immerse yourself in an intensive English program with international students at the University of Manitoba.
  • Explore for Youth (13-15) Virtual Format: An interactive virtual program with a focus on practical communication skills and strategies focusing on culture and current themes and topics.

  • Sociocultural and recreational activities
  • Outdoor excursions to cultural and historic sites
  • Fun virtual activities such as tours, chat café, games, etc.

Classroom and Mandatory Activities Hours

The classroom and mandatory activities hours are:


  • Monday to Friday, 8:30am-3:00pm CDT (Central Daylight Time) for In-Person 18+ program
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30am-1:45pm CDT for Virtual 16+ program and Explore for Youth (13-15) Virtual Format

Placement Test

Prior to arrival, Explore students will receive an email with instructions on how to take an online placement test. The results of the placement test will help determine the language level, so that students can be placed in an appropriate level.


Socio-Cultural Activities

Socio-cultural activities will provide opportunities for students to use the language while exploring the uniqueness of Winnipeg and Manitoba. They will include outdoor excursions to cultural and historic sites and recreational activities.


2026 Program Dates

The 2026 program dates are:


  • In-Person 18+ (5 weeks):
    • Session 1: May 25 – June 26
    • Session 2: July 13 – August 14
  • Virtual 16+ (5 weeks):
    • Session 1: July 6 – August 7
  • Virtual 13-15 year-olds (3 weeks):
    • Session 1: July 6 – July 24
    • Session 2: July 27 - August 14

Eligibility Requirements & Application

The eligibility requirements and application process for Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents, and International Students are as follows:


  • Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents: Explore is an intensive, government-funded immersion program. If chosen for funding, a simple one-time fee of $275 is all it takes to get started.
  • International Students: The Explore Program offers opportunities for international students to connect and engage with French-speaking Canadian citizens or permanent residents and enhance their knowledge and skills in the English language together.

Program Expectations

The program expectations include:


  • Code of Conduct: The ELC and the University of Manitoba are committed to a safe and respectful learning and teaching environment.
  • Academic Integrity: The ELC follows the University of Manitoba's guidelines for academic integrity.
  • Program Rules: Dismissal from the program may occur due to various reasons such as refusing to speak the target language, missing classes or activities without valid permission, behaving irresponsibly, etc.

Homestay

The Homestay program provides international students an opportunity to live in a Canadian home and experience local culture while studying at the University of Manitoba. The Homestay includes:


  • Airport pick-up and drop-off
  • A learning environment with a kind and caring family offering real and practical English language experiences
  • A local Homestay Coordinator who is prepared to meet in person with students to discuss concerns
  • A private bedroom and study area
  • Three meals a day
  • Laundry facilities and WiFi access
  • 2 complementary Winnipeg Transit bus tickets
  • 24/7 emergency assistance with issues that arise

Medical Insurance Coverage

All Canadian and Permanent Resident students should bring their health cards and are responsible for their health coverage. International students should contact the English Language Centre to arrange Medical Insurance Coverage.
