Family Practice Anesthesia Enhanced Skills Residency

The Family Practice Anesthesia Enhanced Skills Residency is a third-year residency designed to provide residents with the skills necessary to practice anesthesia as part of a comprehensive family medicine practice. The goal is to produce physicians who can provide safe, competent, general, neuraxial, and regional anesthesia for uncomplicated procedures on reasonably healthy patients, including children over the age of three.

Program Details

  • The program consists of several mandatory blocks, one vacation block of four weeks, and one elective block in an area of interest, chosen by the resident.
  • The expected duration of the program is 6-12 months.
  • The program is accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
  • The CaRMS match for this program is FM/ES (Family Medicine/Enhanced Skills Match).

Rotations

  • Tertiary Anesthesia (4): The adult tertiary rotations are the largest component of the training program, divided between the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital.
  • Community Anesthesia (1): This rotation provides residents with expertise and experience in all aspects of anesthesia practice in a community setting.
  • Obstetric Anesthesia (1): This rotation allows residents to spend a concentrated period of time in the obstetrical anesthesia environment.
  • ICU (1): This rotation develops residents' knowledge and skills in managing critically ill patients.
  • Pediatric Anesthesia (2): Completed near the end of the year of training, this rotation offers access to excellent teaching and hands-on experience.
  • Rural Anesthesia (2): The rural anesthesia rotations allow residents to refresh their skills in rural family practice.
  • Elective (1): One block is dedicated to an elective, with options including an additional rotation in any of the mandatory core blocks, regional anesthesia, or chronic pain service.
