Master of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (MSUR ORL -HNS)

The Master of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (MSUR ORL -HNS) is a postgraduate program that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose, throat, as well as head and neck disorders. Graduates of this program are exposed to technical theories and practical knowledge relevant to the discipline through a comprehensive syllabus and rotational postings in Oral-Maxilla-facial Surgery, Neuro-surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, as well as undertaking a research project in the field of Otorhinolaryngology.


Programme Educational Objectives (PEO)

The program educational objectives are as follows:


  1. Expert practitioners in Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery who are highly-trained and demonstrate the ability to integrate basic knowledge of science to solve problems in clinical and operative aspects of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.
  2. Expert practitioners who can contribute effectively to the delivery of national health services by adhering to the principles of ethics, communication, professionalism, and social responsibility.
  3. Expert practitioners who are committed to continuous professional learning and skills advancement through professional growth and development opportunities provided by participation in professional societies and forming lifelong learning cultures.

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO)

The program learning outcomes are as follows:


  1. Use advanced knowledge and the principles and concepts of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery for patient care that is safe, effective, and efficient.
  2. Conduct surgery in Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.
  3. Adopt social skills and responsibilities in the conduct of clinical tasks in the field of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.
  4. Demonstrate high professional values, attitudes, and ethics in handling clinical responsibilities in the field of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.
  5. Communicate and interact effectively, display leadership skills, and be able to work as a team with all levels of staff, including hospital management and patients.
  6. Critically analyze and conduct scientific research to solve problems related to services in Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.
  7. Apply knowledge and information using information technology in clinical services and forming lifelong learning culture.

    • Clinical role e.g. managing multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics and special clinics.

Course Structure

The program of study comprises two stages:


  1. Stage I:
  • Eighteen months of study (for foreign candidates and Malaysians who have not done six months of surgical posting prior to the entry of this programme).
  • Twelve months of study (for Malaysian candidates who have completed the six months of surgical posting prior to the entry of this programme) in Basic Otorhinolaryngology including:
    • Six months in Basic and Applied Medical Sciences and Principles of Surgery.
    • Six months in General Surgery (for foreign candidates and Malaysians who have not done six months of surgical posting prior to the entry of this programme).
    • The keeping of a log book of the candidate's surgical procedures.
  1. Stage II:
  • Thirty months of study (for foreign candidates and Malaysians who have not done six months of surgical posting prior to the entry of this programme).
  • Thirty-six months of study (for Malaysian candidates who have completed the six months of surgical posting prior to the entry of this programme) in Advanced Otorhinolaryngology including rotational postings in Oral and Maxilla-facial Surgery, Neuro-surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a research project in the field of Otorhinolaryngology.

  • Associate Professor Dr. Revadi Govindaraju: Programme Coordinator, Senior lecturer/ Senior Consultant, specializes in ENT/ Rhinology & Skull Base Surgery.
  • Professor Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Mohd Amin Jalaludin: Professor Kehormat, specializes in ENT/ Head & Neck Surgery.
  • Professor Dato' Dr. Pepageran Narayanan: Senior lecturer/Senior Consultant, specializes in ENT/ Head & Neck Surgery / Otology & Neurotology/ Rhinology & Skull Base Surgery.
  • Professor Dr. Mohd Zulkiflee Abu Bakar: Senior lecturer/Senior Consultant, specializes in ENT/ Head & Neck Surgery.
  • Associate Professor Dr. Tg. Ahmad Shahrizal b. Tengku Dato' Omar: Senior lecturer/Senior Consultant, specializes in ENT / Rhinology & Skull Base Surgery.
  • Dr. Chong Aun Wee: Senior lecturer/Senior Consultant, specializes in ENT.
  • Dr. Liew Yew Toong: Senior lecturer, specializes in ENT/ Head & Neck Surgery.
  • Dr. Jeyasakthy Saniasiaya: Senior lecturer, specializes in ENT & Paediatric ENT.
  • Dr. Gagandeep Singh Mann: Senior lecturer, specializes in ENT.

Language Requirement

A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language shall be required:


  1. To obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  2. To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic).

Entry Requirement

The entry requirements are as follows:


  1. Entry qualifications: The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and at least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
  2. Other requirements: Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate's programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.

Intake Session

The intake session is once a year in the month of June.
