Master Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution
The Master's degree in Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution is designed to train high-level specialists capable of identifying, understanding, and solving environmental problems related to ecology and evolutionary biology. The program aims to provide students with the skills needed to carry out research, engineering, appraisal, and/or management activities in a wide range of fields.
Description
The Master's degree is structured into four pathways:
- Biodiversity: functions and conservation (BioFC)
- Adaptive management of biodiversity (Gabi)
- Ecology for town and country management (Ecogest)
- "Nature-based solutions" (SolFondNat, formerly EcoTech)
Aims
The program aims to enable students to develop their research, engineering, expertise, and/or management activities autonomously, taking into account the diversity of issues, players, and spatio-temporal scales, and the perception of societal and environmental issues relating to climate change and the ecological transition.
Targeted Students
The program is designed for students with bachelor's degrees or equivalent in Life Sciences and Life and Earth Sciences from French or foreign universities. Students from L3 courses in Geography and Planning and from professional degrees in the fields of nature protection and management or the environment are also welcome, subject to a prerequisite.
Admission Conditions
Access to M1 or M2 requires holders of a national bac+3 diploma, VAE, VAP, or a validated first year of a master's degree.
Fundamental Prerequisites
Holders of a bachelor's degree in biology, motivated by evolutionary biology, ecology, biodiversity, and their stakes, destined for fundamental or applied research and biodiversity management.
Structure and Organisation
Admissions are made within each course, which have different prerequisites. Enrolment in one of the four pathways of the mention is established at the time of recruitment. The courses are differentiated from the second semester onwards.

Learning and Research
The BEE Master's degree is a research-led course accredited as an Academy of Excellence by Aix Marseille University. It is supported by two OSU laboratories, Institut Pytheas, and is supported by the Aix-Marseille University.
School Registration
The program includes a 2-month work placement in the first year. Practical work, particularly of the "field trip" type, is compulsory in each semester of the course.
Knowledge to be Acquired
The program is based on concepts and knowledge in ecology, conservation biology, population biology and genetics, evolutionary biology, biostatistics, ecophysiology, palaeoecology, and functional ecology.
Professional Skills to be Acquired
The degree is structured by three blocks of skills and knowledge into which the UEs are integrated and which form different learning outcomes:
- Block 1 (Knowledge): Master the concepts and use disciplinary and transdisciplinary scientific knowledge to identify and address problems in the sciences of ecology and evolution.
- Block 2 (Construct): Determine, develop, and apply methods and tools for the analysis of biological and ecological objects.
- Block 3 (Apply): Apply methods and tools for the analysis of biological and evolutionary objects.
Internships and Supervised Projects
The course includes a 2-month work placement in the first year. A 5- to 6-month end-of-study internship takes place in semester 4.
Offsite Teaching
Two 5-day field courses in M1 and M2.

Credits and Fees
The program requires 120 credits. The initial training fees are 250 , with a differentiated fee rate for non-EU students. Continuing education fees are also available.
