Preparatory One-Year Programme: Dutch as a Foreign Language in an Academic Context
The University offers a preparatory one-year programme for refugees, focusing on Dutch as a foreign language in an academic context. This programme is designed for young people and adults planning to continue their studies in Dutch-language higher education.
Target Audience
- Young people (aged 17 to 25) planning to continue their studies, having finished secondary school and achieved a qualification that allows them to enter higher education.
- Adults planning to continue their studies, having already attained a Bachelor or Master degree in their own country and wishing to continue studying in Dutch-language higher education.
Conditions
- Valid proof of identity with a passport or identity card. Alternative documents, such as an attest van immatriculatie (orange card) or a bijlage 3, 26, etc., will be accepted as valid proof of identity without a passport or identity card.
- Refugee status in Belgium: asylum seeker, refugee status, subsidiary protection, or displaced persons from Ukraine with temporary protection.
- A copy of the degree certificate that gives direct access to higher studies in the country where the degree was obtained. If the document is in a language other than English, Dutch, French, or German, a translation into one of these four languages is required, in addition to the original document.

- A score of at least 40 out of 48 on the COVAAR test (for students aged 17-25 who only completed their secondary school).
- A Bachelor or Master degree.
- Intermediate knowledge of English (CEFR level B1), or proof of having studied English as a foreign language (either as a curricular course or an extra-curricular course consisting of at least 50 hours).
- Ability to attend classes in a full-time study programme.
- Plans to continue studying in Flemish higher education.
- Income criterion: a total gross family income of less than 3000 per month (or less than 2000 per month for a single person), proven through recent documents (less than one month old) such as evidence of replacement income from social security services or limited income.
Deadlines and Important Dates
- Applications will open on 1 May 2025.
- The deadline for submitting the online application is 3 July 2025.
- Applications and documents will be reviewed on 4 July 2025.
- On Monday, 7 July 2025, selected applicants will receive an appointment for a written test by email.
- The written test will be held on Wednesday, 9 July 2025. Applicants who score high enough on the written test will receive an appointment for an interview by email.
- Interviews will be held on Thursday, 10 July 2025. Applicants who are not selected based on the written test and/or the interview will be notified on the same day.
- In the second half of August or early September, an academic committee will select candidates for the available scholarships and decide on a list of alternate candidates. Applicants will be notified of the committee's decision as soon as possible.
- The programme starts with a welcome week on 15 September 2025 and ends on 30 June 2026.
How to Apply
- Applications can be submitted by completing the online application form, available from 1 May 2025 until 3 July 2025.
- Important: a submitted application must be complete before the application deadline. An application will be evaluated on the predetermined date (see deadlines). If one or more documents are missing, the application will be rejected; it will not be possible to add missing documents after the application deadline has passed.
