Master's Degree Programme in Human Neuroscience

The Master's Degree Programme in Human Neuroscience is a 2-year program that provides students with a deep understanding of human brain function and its relation to behavior. The program is run by the Turku Brain and Mind Center (TBMC) in collaboration with experts from three faculties: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Technology.

Extent of the Study Programme

The extent of the study programme is 120 ECTS, which is typically completed in two academic years.

Tuition Fee

The tuition fee for the program is free for citizens of EU/EEA countries or Switzerland, while citizens of non-EU/EEA countries are required to pay 10,000 per academic year.

Qualifications

Upon completion of the program, students are awarded a Master of Science degree.

Studies Begin

The studies begin in late August 2026, and the location of the program is Turku, Finland. The language of instruction is English.

Faculty/Department

The program is offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Turku Brain and Mind Center, with an annual quota of 20 students. The application period is in January 2026.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the program include:

• A nationally recognized first cycle degree (normally a Bachelor's degree) from an accredited institution of higher education
• The degree must correspond to at least 180 ECTS or three years of full-time study
• The degree must give eligibility to master-level studies in the country where it was issued
• Excellent English language skills, with a certificate that proves those skills
• Programme-specific degree requirements, which include a degree in a relevant field such as psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, medical sciences, biomedicine, biochemistry, life sciences, biology, physics, computer science, mathematics, statistics, or engineering

Motivation Letter

Applicants must include a motivation letter that describes their plans and goals, why they are interested in the Master's Degree Programme in Human Neuroscience, the relevance of their study history, knowledge and studies in statistics and/or programming, and English skills.

• Brain Imaging Methods (15 ECTS)
• Clinical Neuroscience (23 ECTS)
• Behavioral Methods to measure human cognition, perception, consciousness, and performance (10 ECTS)
• Data Analysis (10 ECTS)
• Elective Courses (17 ECTS)
• Human Neuroscience Seminars
• Master's thesis (40 ECTS)

Career Prospects

The program provides students with broad knowledge to use behavioral methods, non-invasive brain imaging, and structural brain measures as indices of the complex brain-behavior relationship in different settings. Graduates can work in medical companies, health and game industries, or continue studies and research towards a PhD.

Competence Description

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

• Understand and measure complex brain functions at systems level
• Measure human cognition, perception, and behavior
• Integrate brain-level and behavioral measurements to investigate human performance in different contexts
• Design and manage research projects
• Analyze behavioral and imaging data
• Work in international and interdisciplinary research groups

Research Areas

The program is run by the Turku Brain and Mind Center (TBMC), which provides a multidisciplinary context for comprehensive theoretical and practical education in human neurosciences. The center has excellent research facilities for non-invasive brain imaging, including PET, MRI, fMRI, EEG, TMS, and optical imaging. Researchers at TBMC have a wide network of connections within the Turku area, in Finland, and internationally, providing students with opportunities to work and learn in practical research projects.
