Digital Filters (OPEN UNI)

Course Overview

The Digital Filters course is a 5 ECTS credit program offered during the academic year. The course aims to equip students with the ability to specify and design frequency selective FIR and IIR filters using common methods.

Education Information

Implementation Date

The course is implemented from 05.01.2026 to 08.03.2026.

Enrollment Period

The enrollment period for the course is from 19.11.2025 to 18.12.2025.

Field of Education

The field of education for this course is Information and Communication Technologies.

Subject

The subject of the course is Computer Science and Engineering.

Mode of Delivery

The course is delivered through contact studies.

Price

The course is free.

Maximum Participants

The maximum number of participants for the course is 20.

Education Description

The course covers the following topics:

  • Sampling theorem, aliasing, and imaging
  • Discrete Fourier transform
  • Z-transform and frequency response
  • Correlation and convolution
  • Digital filter design
  • FIR filter design and realizations
  • IIR filter design and realizations
  • Finite word length effects and analysis
  • Multi-rate signal processing

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for the course are:

  • Complex Analysis
  • Signal Analysis

Objectives

The objectives of the course are:

  1. To enable students to specify and design frequency selective FIR and IIR filters using common methods.
  2. To enable students to solve for the impulse and frequency responses of FIR and IIR filters given as difference equations, transfer functions, or realization diagrams.
  3. To enable students to explain the impacts of finite word length in filter design.
  4. To provide students with the necessary basic skills to use signal processing tools available in the Matlab environment and to judge the results.

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered through online teaching and contact teaching, including online lectures and exercises (50 hours). The design exercises familiarize students with the methods of digital signal processing using the Matlab software package.

Teachers/Instructors

The instructor for the course is Matteo Pedone.

Teaching Language

The teaching languages for the course are Finnish and English.

Study Methods

The course can be passed either with week exams or a final exam. In addition, the exercises need to be returned and accepted.

Assessment Criteria

The course utilizes a numerical grading scale of 1-5, where zero stands for a fail.

Further Information

The language of instruction is Finnish/English, and the course is offered in the spring, period 3. The target group for the course is Computer Science and Engineering students and other students of the University of Oulu. The person responsible for the course is Olli Silv幯.
