Master of Applied Literary Arts Program

The Master of Applied Literary Arts (MALA) program is a graduate degree offered by Memorial University's Grenfell Campus. The program provides students with the opportunity to explore the practical applications of literary studies, including arts management, literary production, and community engagement.

Program Overview

The MALA program is designed to be completed in one to two years, depending on the route chosen by the student. The program offers three routes:

• One-year full-time with major research paper and internship
• Two-year part-time with major research paper and work experience instead of internship
• Two-year full-time with thesis and internship

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the MALA program, students must meet the admission requirements set by the university. The application deadline for Fall admission is February 15.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the MALA program vary depending on the student's residency status:

• Newfoundland and Labrador students: $635-$1,313 per semester
• Other Canadian students: $826-$1,707 per semester
• International students: $1,074-$2,218 per semester

Funding

The MALA program offers funding to students, including a graduate assistantship of $11,000.

The MALA program requires students to complete 27 credit hours for the Major Research Project route or 33 credit hours for the Thesis route. The program includes:

Internship

The internship is a paid position of $3000, offered as a graduate assistantship from the Vice-President of Graduate and Research, Grenfell. The internship is 135 hours for one-year students and 270 hours for two-year students.

Major Research Project

The major research project is a theoretical exploration and analysis of one of the applied literary projects the student participated in during the course work or internship. The project is evaluated by the supervisor and one member of the MALA faculty or a faculty member from a cognate discipline and/or a member of the arts community.

Thesis

The thesis is an in-depth exploration and analysis of one of the applied literary projects the student participated in during the course work or internship. The thesis is evaluated by a thesis committee composed of the supervisor and two other faculty from the MALA program and/or another faculty member from a cognate discipline and/or a member of an arts organization or arts organizer who worked with the student during the internship.

Evaluation

Students in the MALA program must obtain a grade of B or better in all program courses and their major research project or thesis. Students who receive a grade of less than B in a program course may be permitted to remain in the program, provided the course or an equivalent is taken and passed with a grade of B or better.
