Programme: MMed Family Medicine
Programme Information
The MMed Family Medicine programme is offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria.
- The programme is a full-time, four-year programme.
- The total credits for the programme are 534.
- The programme includes a research component, which must be completed prior to the exit exam.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the MMed Family Medicine programme, applicants must:
- Hold an MBChB degree from the University of Pretoria or an equivalent qualification.
- Be registered as a physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa for at least one year.
- International students must have their qualifications verified by SAQA.
Programme Structure
The programme consists of the following components:
- Applied research methodology (TNM 802)
- A dissertation (MMS 890) or a research article that has been accepted for publication in a subsidised periodical
- Clinical training and practice
Examinations and Pass Requirements
- A minimum final mark of 50% is required to pass in a subject.
- A subminimum of 50% is required in the clinical section of the examination.
- A student is not admitted to the examination in a prerequisite subject more than twice, nor is he or she admitted to the examination in the major subject more than twice.
Exemption
The Faculty Board may grant partial exemption from the training and work on the grounds of comparable training and experience completed in another post or at another recognised institution.
Pass with Distinction
The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who has obtained a final mark of at least 75% in their major subject.

The programme includes the following core modules:
- Anatomy, embryology and histology (AEH 801)
- Diagnostic laboratory medicine (DLM 807)
- Physiology (FSG 809)
- Family medicine (HAK 800)
- Applied research methodology (TNM 802)
- Dissertation (MMS 890)
General Information
- Registrars are expected to participate increasingly in the examining and treatment of patients in the hospital.
- Lectures/symposia with closely related departments are organised, as well as discussions of literature, etc.
- The programme is subject to change, and students are expected to familiarise themselves with the General Regulations (G Regulations) of the University of Pretoria.
