Egypt Sees a Rise in Students Wanting to Study Abroad
Explore the surge in Egyptian students pursuing higher education outside their borders, reflecting a growing demand for global academic opportunities.

In the past decade, the number of Egyptian students pursuing higher education abroad has nearly tripled, escalating from 12,300 in 2008 to over 43,700 as of 2022 as reported by UNESCO. This significant surge reflects a burgeoning demand for higher education that positions Egypt as a crucial growth market for student recruitment in the coming years.

As the most populous country in the Arab world, with a population exceeding 107 million, Egypt is projected to add millions more by 2030. Nearly 20% of Egyptians are aged between 15 and 24, a demographic that faces considerable challenges, including a high unemployment rate, particularly among graduates. With 36% of unemployed youth holding tertiary degrees, the desire for quality education that leads to viable job opportunities is driving students to look beyond their national borders for academic advancement.

Egypt's educational landscape presents a complex scenario. While there are over 20 public and private universities serving the educational needs of the population, the rapid growth of the student demographic means that even an expansion of local institutions will not sufficiently meet demand. This gap has prompted an increasing number of students to seek degrees in countries such as the United States, Canada, and various European nations. Among these, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are particularly attractive, with approximately a third of Egyptian students opting for studies in these regions as of 2022.

Despite the allure of foreign education, significant barriers remain. English proficiency rates are notably low in Egypt, at rank 55 out of 70 countries worldwide (EF English proficiency index, 2016), necessitating that foreign universities not only attract Egyptian students but also adequately prepare them for success in programs taught in languages such as English, French, German, and Japanese. Language schools play a critical role in bridging this gap, ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary linguistic skills to thrive in diverse educational environments.

Looking forward, the potential for outbound student mobility from Egypt is immense. The demand for international education is not only driven by the quest for knowledge but also by the limited job opportunities within the country, particularly for those without connections to secure government positions. Families seeking better futures for their children are increasingly inclined to invest in foreign education, often favoring programs linked to in-demand careers in the global job market.

International schools in Egypt have begun to align with these aspirations. The K-12 educational landscape is witnessing substantial growth, particularly among private institutions, which have almost doubled their enrolment in the past five years. These schools, many of which offer British, American, and International Baccalaureate curricula, are cultivating a student body well-prepared for the rigors of overseas study.

Enrolment in private schools has surged, achieving a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3%, while public schools have seen a modest CAGR of 3.6%. This trend underscores a growing preference among parents in Egypt for private education, as reported by Colliers International.

“Supply of private schools has also grown at 4.4% CAGR between 2014-15 and 2018-19, which is more than double the rate of growth in public schools, which indicates increasing investor interest in the sector,” it reported.

However, foreign educational institutions must approach this emerging market with caution. A substantial proportion of Egyptian students lag behind their global peers in educational preparedness, often requiring additional academic and language support. Addressing these disparities is essential for ensuring the success of Egyptian students in international programs.

As Egypt continues to evolve as a source market for international student recruitment, foreign universities have reached comprehensive strategies that attract students and also facilitate their successful transition into academic life abroad.
