Program Overview
The MA in Emancipatory K12 School Leadership (MELS) is a university program designed to serve leaders in educational settings.
Program Requirements
A Preliminary Administrative Services Credential (PASC) is not required to enroll in this program. However, all California Administrative Credentials can be used as 12 units towards this MA.
Credit Transfer
Credits can be transferred if they have not been already applied toward a degree. These credits will be evaluated after admission to the program.
Program Orientation
The program is oriented towards leaders in the PreK-12 community, including both schools and community settings.
PASC/CalAPA Requirements
The PASC/CalAPA affects program requirements in the following ways:
- Students who have completed the PASC/CalAPA will be able to transfer 12 units of coursework and will complete the remaining 18 units through MELS coursework.
- Students who have not completed the PASC (Preliminary Administrative Services Credential)/CalAPA (PASC Assessment) will be enrolled in the individualized pathway and take courses as a specialization in an area of interest related to educational leadership. These courses will be pre-approved by the department.
Admission Criteria
No specific admission criteria are mentioned beyond the evaluation of credits for transfer after admission.
Program Structure
The program structure varies depending on whether the student has completed the PASC/CalAPA. For those who have, the program consists of the transferred 12 units plus 18 units of MELS coursework. For those who have not, the program involves an individualized pathway with pre-approved courses in educational leadership.
