Program Overview


University Program: Minor in Special Education

The Minor in Special Education is a 4-course track program that offers two tracks: Track 1 - Inclusive Education and Track 2 - Early Childhood Special Education. Courses taken for the Minor in Special Education can also be used towards one of the Education Specialist Credential Programs, provided that the student has obtained a bachelor's degree before enrolling in the credential program.


Track 1 - Inclusive Education

  • EDSE 102 - Speech, Language & Typical, Atypical Development
  • EDSE 110 - Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • EDSE 124 - Methodologies for English Learners with and without Disabilities
  • EDSE 241 - Emerging Technology for All Learners
    • Please note that EDSE 241 is only offered in the fall semester.
    • EDSE 124 and EDSE 110 are typically offered in the spring semester.

Track 2 - Early Childhood Special Education

  • EDSE 102 - Speech, Language & Typical, Atypical Development
  • EDSE 104 - Atypical Development in Young Children
  • EDSE 108 - Assessment and Evaluation: Atypical Young Children
  • EDSE 110 - Autism Spectrum Disorders
    • Please note that EDSE 104 and EDSE 108 are typically offered in the fall semester.

Steps to Request to Add a Minor

To earn a minor in Special Education (Inclusive or Early Childhood), students must apply to declare the minor. The application process involves reviewing eligibility criteria and completing the application form.


  • Minor Application due dates:
    • Fall Semester: October 1
    • Spring Semester: March 1
  • Minor applications will be accepted from the beginning of the semester until the due date.
  • Minor applications will be processed 4-6 weeks after submission.
  • Students will be notified when their minor application is complete.
  • No applications will be processed during the summer.
